front barrel band sling stud
« on: July 19, 2011, 06:02:02 AM »
can anyone give me a model # for uncle mike's or any other brand that fits the 45 LC BC?

i checked their web site but i'm confused on the internal diameter----of their models seem way to small for the H&R barrel

thanks...280

I just went through the same thing, 4 times, 4 different rifles and sizes.  The rifles are all on BC Carbine stocks.  Try Grafs.com.  That's where I got mine.  They have all different sizes.

pete---are you attaching them to the barrel or the stock--i want one of those split barrel bands like on the african big game rifles and for the rear, i'll modify the leather recoil pad from cabela's with a stud and have a cobbler sew in some ammo loops--then i can use a sling

twoeighty, I used the barrel band up front and the threaded stud in the butt.  One of the rifles I put them on was a BC Carbine, but I don't recall what number it is.  The BC forend is so slender, I didn't want to risk a wood thread stud.

The 45LC  barrel is .850" ahead of the forend, so you'll need one that's at least .800" which is ~3" ahead of the forend.

Tim, the ones in the link you posted are the ones I got.  They are Uncle Mikes.  I had two problems with them.  First the Allen screws in them are soft and heads strip before the band is fully tight.  Secondly, the .700 to .750 band did not tighten well at all.  The barrel diameter at that point was .711.  Overall, I was disappointed with their overall fit and quality.  I'll probably epoxy it when I pick up replacement screws or order a smaller band.

The .800"-.850" would be my choice in the UM line of clamp on type, and adding a bit of epoxy or Black Max 380 would make them work better, I have a larger set on my TDC turkey gun, I had to replace the cross screw with a bolt and nut and added Black Max 380 as well to get them to stay put.  For the 45LC barrel I'd use one of the one piece units like the Talley if you want to save some money, after fitting, use the BM 380 or silver solder. Ideally, fitting the one-piece mount would be done with a tapered reamer, but I think you could get away with sanding or filing it to fit.

Too bad, mine is for about a .900".......
Here is what I have found with the two piece; it is hard (impossible?) to get it tight enough to keep it from rotating on the barrel under the kinds of sideways stress a sling put on, and Im pretty careful. That can/will marr a barrel. The epoxy on also may help this, dont know as I decided that I just cant trust the 'easy on' design to keep from failing and dropping one of my guns onto the dirt and rocks.
Spend the extra and get a one piece or do as I have done and get a sling with a sewn down barrel loop and a buttstock sling swivel, no front swivel required and it fits everything. It just isnt as sexy looking as the barrelband type.

I put a one piece on mine, sorry I don't remember the brand or size.  But I did have to both epoxy it, and file a little bit where it screws together to get a good fit and have it stay.  44 Man

gcrank1, where can I find a sling like that that requires no front swivel?  I could really use one on the 45-70.

Where to get the 'slip on'......
It was so long ago and I come&go with CRS.......
Maybe try 'Sportsmans Guide' or 'Cheaper Than Dirt'; it wasnt very expensive (cheap actually) and I kept the front as is, but changed the rear, which had some kind of funky velcro band deal to go around the wrist, to a simple loop with a QD sling swivel. With some nylon webbing from the hardware or surplus store (or leather or whatever) you could whip one up pretty quick.

Those tiny set screws are 5-40 thread if made in America.  I tried to find them in bulk in order to sell them on my screws page--no luck even in small quantities. Me, I would re-tap the hammer spur either 6-48 or 8-40 and use a plain ol' slotted or hex plug screw.  I believe 8-40 w/hex screw would be best.

I would oversize them too, but go incrementally by # size (ie, #5 to #6, etc.), that way I have something left in 'reserve' to go to if needed, but that just me.......

The set screw in the Uncle Mike's 2456-0 H&R hammer extension has always been 8-32, I've replaced a few that had the heads buggered, never had one with stripped threads tho. The newest one I have is on my 2008 SS Ultra Hunter, I just checked it, still 8-32, but if they're made offshore now, hard tellin what thread they are.

From the FAQs...

The hammer extension set screw is an 8-32 socket head that takes a 5/64" or 1/16" allen wrench, depends on when the extension was made.
