Winchester Model 97 "Deer Rifle"
« on: September 02, 2011, 06:43:54 AM »
Hey there:

I am elated, my old Model 97 12guage that I had made up for a deer gun. It is a cylinder bore, 12 guage with a 18 1/2" barrel with soldered on deer rifle sights. I am so happy, have just test fired groups of Win. Super X at 1600 FPS, and 1 oz. slugs. At 50 yards bench rest, will almost touch each other, and they will fit into half of a palm area easily.

My Remington 1 oz. slugs will do the same, and they are 1560 FPS. Both these brands are "rifled" slugs for a smooth bore. Needless to say, this is beyond my wildest dreams and I'm just now starting. Only thing, probably have to lay off shooting for awhile, both will rattle your dental work. No fun bench rest shooting and sighting in a 12 guage shotgun with slugs. I have more slugs coming, I want to try as many different brands I can. This is really exciting. Just wish I had a scope on it, but doubt if I'll ever scope my ole Model 97.

Just had to share my excitement, I have a H&R 12 guage slug gun, it has a scope on it, have not fired it yet. I have 2 brands of Sabots to try in it. If it outshoot this ole smooth bore 97 this ole boy will be one happy camper, and I am sure it will.

I also have a smooth bore Remington 1100 with rifle sights on it, got to test it, and see what it likes. My shoulder is hurting already, and I'm using a homemade padding for this brutal enjoyment.

Best,

Hey, I know all guns are different, but write up some of your best slugs for your guns.

Shotguns and slugs are always a mystery!
Sometimes when you least expect it you'll get a pleasant surprise (as with your 97), other times it seems you can't make one shoot worth a hill of beans no matter how hard you try.

I once had a Model 12 with a modified choke and just a bead sight that for some unknown reason would shoot phenomenal groups with 1oz Super-X rifled slugs.  I won't even say how small the groups were at 50 yards because I didn't believe it myself the first time I walked down to look at the target!

Of course being young and foolish I traded it off for something "newer and better".  Now I can't remember what I traded it for, but I remember that gun!

Wm, my old grandpa had only one gun, a side hammer double.  It's retired now and resting in my safe.  He killed anything he needed to.  Hogs got the cut shell treatment when they escaped and got wild.  The cut shell will enter but not exit on a large hog, but the hog is anchored just the same.

My slug guns put my hunt within 50 yds, (my rule) which just makes it more fun. It tests me more than the gun. ear
