Handi .356 Winchester.....a reality (UPDATED PAGE 2)
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:49:11 AM »
The 18 inch .356 is finished and boresighted.  I'll put it on paper after lunch.

I want to thank Dinny for the inspiration and load info, jeepmann1948 for trading barrels and doing the work, cwlongshot for the stock set and boatboy for the frame.  Patty traded the barrel for the one jeepman traded me.  The rifle's a little beauty and turned out fine.

I've got too much ice here to do more than just put it on paper this afternoon.  I'll post a range report as soon as I can.  I'm going to compare factory ammo to my own reloads.

Spanky, the old dog is indeed old.  He's a neat old man.  The cage is for his younger brat "brother" not in the pic.  Keeps him from chewing everything in the house while we're gone.  He goes in by himself with a blanket and  toy and seems to like it. ::)

CW, sorry for covering up your beautiful stock, but I do like the Allen cartridge holders.  The scope is just another 4x32 Bushnell Banner on medium Burris Zee rings.  I forgot to mention, according to the book, the 200 gr. Hornady is supposed to be doing 2550 fps.  We'll see.

Put on your ice skates and come on out and shoot it.  I haven't done anything else, but I have found out it goes BANG with authority ;)

Pete,
That rifle is a thing of beauty! You will really like the "authority" of the .356 Win. Mine is starting to show a preference for 250gr bullets. Sure wish I had time to shoot it more..... :(  But I'm stuck down in Tigerland for the next 20+ days.

Thanks, Dinny

For some odd reason mine doesn't like .358 brass. I tried about 20 different pieces mixed with fire-formed and factory brass. It could just be a touchy extractor... :-\

I am REALLY getting excited about mine now... the barrel should be here late this week. Now I gotta rent the reamer... Then get the extractor work done.

George, I love it.  Thank you again.  It ain't the cold or wet, ya can't strand up out there.  Rain on top of snow, melt, freeze, melt freeze.  Ya gotta wear ice grippers to get to the barn.....and then ya gotta be careful.  I've already got some jugs out there freezing.  Should be fun tomorrow.

I really want to get her dialed in and see what she'll do.  I'm going to play with the .358s when my Sierra boat tails get here.  They're on backorder.  It'll give me time to get some brass.

Tim, it's good to see you bitten again with the disease.  Just look at how many of us you've managed to corrupt ::) ::)

Dan, "Donor" is boxer/great dane/pit bull, about 100 lbs.  He's got a universal type of dog blood and gave a lot of it when he was young and living in an animal shelter.  He's a wonderful part of the family and terrific watch dog.  He's the only non-hunting dog we have.  The others are three Beagles and a Feist.

Ok, Pete and Dinny:

Give us the scoop on how these shoot.  Looking at some other pages, the 16 twist 35 rem barrel is a little slow for the heavier bullets(250gr).  Most are saying 12-14 twist gives the best over performance.

What ya'll say......... ;)   Kinda wantin/needin a 356/358 to shoot my Ranch Dogs in.

I don't believe in the 1:16" twist issue, you'll find shooters in both camps, but both my 35 Whelen H&Rs shoot 250gr just fine.  ;) Using the formula below, the Speer 250gr SP which is 1.230" long has a stability factor of 1.511 at 1500fps, it's one of the 250gr bullets I've shot in my RMEF Whelen.

Stability value should be in the range of 1.3 to 2.0 to ensure bullet stability. Don Miller and Dave Brennan (editor of Precision Shooting) have also been kind enough to let me host his stability paper on my exterior ballistics bibliograpy page. The paper is titled A New Rule for Estimating Rifling Twist An Aid to Choosing Bullets and Rifles.

Bobby, mine was reamed from a .357 extractor barrel a couple of years old.  I never checked its twist, but according to the FAQs it should be a 1 in 18 3/4 or 1 in 15 1/2.  I'm probably going to stick with the lighter 200 - 225 gr.pointed bullets for a higher velocity and flatter trajectory.  They're heavy enough for anything that wanders Michigan......two or four legged. ::)
