44 MAG shorty question
« on: February 19, 2012, 04:39:38 AM »
I picked up a Handi in 44 MAG  recently then had the 22" barrel cut down to 17". I found a Williams Peep Sight set in my boxes of shooting stuff and it fit perfectly where the scope base was  so had the front sight installed by my smith. Well it seems that the front sight is too short. Does any one know which height  I should get?  With cinnamon lam. Mc stock set this gun mounts and swings  like no other I have owned. I can not wait till next deer season.

See the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs, that exact setup worked on my 22" 44mag as well as the 45-70, shot the group below at 100yds with my old eyes and the WGRS/Firesight combo using a 6'Oclock hold.

Since there's been no change in twist for the .44 I'm assuming yours has the 1 in 38 rate.  That being the case maybe I need to change to 225 grain instead of the 240 I have been using.  I can't get a group that good and I have a 4.5 x 20 scope on it.  The scope is an old Bushnell Sportview 1.5 - 4.5 that can only be adjusted with a pipe wrench so I just wrenched it to 4.5 and left it there.

Yes, it's 1:38", have you tried .432" cast in it? My 22" 44mag is now a 445 Supermag, shoots 265gr FTX pretty good at 100yds scoped, the reamer is out now, but there's no one on the waiting list, just an option.

I don't think changing it to .445 will help the "overbore" problem though unless there's something I don't know.  Won't it just be a faster load grouping 6 inches at 100 yds?

Historically, everyone that's done the conversion has been happy, many use the 300gr XTP or 265gr Hornady RN and got good accuracy. The 445 rechamber was very popular several years ago when there was another reamer being passed around.

Thanks for all the input guys and appologies for using this thread but before renting the reamer, which I don't have a T-handle for, I will try the .433 gaschecks in my existing .44.  Who knows the increase in size plus maybe staying with about 240 might just help enough.  Looking for minute of softball at 100 not cloverleaf.
