376 Steyr....Range Report!!!
« on: May 08, 2012, 12:24:13 PM »
I finally decided on what .375" chambering I want, something different of course  ;D, after a lot of him-hawing around I talked with Jess Ocumpaugh of JES Reboring and am sending my extra 7mm-08 barrel to him for rebore and rechamber to 376 Steyr.  8)  I was gonna, and may still, go for a 375 H&H Ackley, but I'll wait to see how the 376 works out, I was gonna send a 26" 25-06 barrel and have it slimmed down to a sporter contour, but he doesn't turn down barrels, just bores and rechambers.

For those interested, the 376 Steyr has a .501" .5061" case head and operates at a maximum of  ~60kpsi, Hodgdon lists a 2600fps 260gr Nosler Partition load @ 54.5kpsi which provides way less breech thrust than a 65kpsi load in the 270 Win, so low to mid level handloads will work fine and a factory round shouldn't be hazardous should one ever get chambered.  I'll be doing the underlug improvement on it also. It has a slightly rebated rim, but isn't rebated much compared to the 300WSM which worked fine as far as ejection/extraction.

The biggest problem I see with it is the shallow 15º short 17º shoulder, I'd be concerned if only shooting factory ammo, but handloading won't be a problem, I did a little research on it, apparently Hornady dies were problematic at one time, so I ordered an RCBS full length die which is less money than a Hornady die set, I already have a 375H&H die set, the seater die should work with it just fine. Midsouth has the die for $44 and 50 Hornady brass($50) in stock.  ;)

Tim

EDIT: It appears the shoulder angle is incorrect on the Steve's pages diagram, Ammoguide lists it as 17º which is verified with SAAMI specs.

That's going to be a good cartridge! I sent my 223 barrel to JES a few months ago and he sent it back as a 375 Whelen Imp. Been having a good time fireforming cases and reloading for it. It will throw a 235 sp 2475 fps and a 270 gr sp 2350 fps. Haven't tried any 300 gr bullets yet.
Keep us posted on your loads and how it shoots when you get it back.
What rate of twist are you going with?

Sounds like a sweet set-up ya got planned Tim!!  Using 45-90 brass like Jedman suggested would give you a rim for the extractor to grab :-\ , but the 376 Steyr is a nice cartridge that deserves more exposure than it has had.  Looking forward to hearing all about it.  Now where is that thread on the lug improvement?  My CRS has been acting up bad, know I read it, can't 'member what it was. :-[   DP

Hornady shows the 376 as running neck and neck with the 375 H&H with their bullets. 8)   Even down loaded some it is still a thumper!  Hey Rog, you following this?  Might work pretty nice up north in a Handi.  DP

BB,
Jes does offer a .366" rebore, but his chamber list doesn't include 9.3x74R. He might do it, but one would have to inquire.

http://www.35caliber.com/8.html

Personally the 74R would get my nod. In fact, it would be a prime option if the Army ever wisens up and sends me to AK.  ::) I would do it on a 26" Handi barrel too.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/9-3x74R.htm

A trip down reality lane made me realize I would need to win the lotto before pursuing this project. ::)

Thanks, Dinny at KAF

What rate of twist are you going with?

12" 14" twist, 3-groove

Is that 7mm-08 barrel a superlite? :o Now that would be one for Tyler to shoot!! ;D Can the Steyr be made from any rimmed brass?

Thanks, Dinny at KAF

No on the Superlight, but it crossed my mind, I even checked with Brian to see how many he had left just in case, but after removing that much metal from a standard 7mm-08, I wanta see how much it weighs. Jesse did say he would do the 7mm-08 Superlight tho.  I have a 243 Superlight barrel that has sights, he won't do it because the rear sight holes are too deep, almost .200"!  ::)  The Steyr can be made from .284 Win and 9.3x64 also, the 9.3x74R  would be another option from my 26" 25-06 barrel, but it's too bad he won't turn barrels down a bit.  :-\

He requires the reamer to have a floating pilot, won't use a solid pilot.

Tim how much does that guy charge to re bore a single shot barrel?

$225 for a 3-groove, $250 for 4 or 5 groove including the rechamber if he has the reamer, add $60 if he has to rent a reamer, return shipping is included.

I am interested in how you were thinking of a belted mag in a handi.

A 375H&H Ackley loaded to 375 H&H Flanged pressures, doing the Ackley version would insure that if by chance anyone ever did load a factory round in it, the pressure in the Ackley chamber would be 37.1kpsi as predicted by QL and the improved chamber should reduce breech thrust some over the tapered parent round.

Tim

PS    Joe, I'll save the 499HE for the Sasquatches!!   ;D

Congratulations on the 376 Steyr. It's an interesting cartridge.

But once again, GBO has been a very bad influence. I had just gotten over my urge to buy a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem because finding them in a straight grip "Texan" is difficult and expensive. So I had settled into just loving my 30-30 Texan. And now I learn about the 35x30-30 perusing the JES website. Damn!

???   Tim, you told me the 9.3x74R wouldn't clean up a .280 chamber as per AmmoGuide.  It says the same thing for the 25-06.  Am I missing something?   :-\   I sure hope I am!   ;D

You're right Richard, darn CRS!!!  ::) :-[ Depending on the donor barrel's chamber, it might possibly be worked around by removing material from the barrel face to effectively set the barrel back some and reffiting to the frame, otherwise you'd be limited to a 24" barrel length which may not be all that bad, a .223 Ultra Varmint barrel for instance.  ;)

I talked to Jesse one more time before shipping the barrel off, he normally does a 14" twist in his .375s, so that's what I'll do, I won't be shooting anything bigger than 270gr, but even a 300gr Barnes TSX has a Miller stability factor of 1.485 at 1500fps, anything between 1.2 and 2.0 is good to go, the military uses 1.5. With a MV of 2400fps(54kpsi) it would still be moving almost 1650fps at 400yds, farther than I'll ever shoot! ;D
