True...  :-\   But I was wondering if they even considered a cartride like the 50-140...   But they must have looked at things like the 460 W'by, Lott, etc. so I guess that's close enough!

One way to find out for sure!   ;D

You can always ask em, they've always replied quickly what I've sent emails, they might want the case capacity.

Richard,

I asked Hodgdon this question already and I got an emailed "Yes".  I have shot up to 100% Trail Boss in the 45-120 and mild recoil and no sign of overpressure.  With a 405 grain HB bullet the best velocity I got in the 45-120 was just over 1300 FPS so I would expect about the same performance in the 50-140.

Hummmm...  :-\   That seems like an awful lot of a costly propellant for the velocity return...
Guess I'll just buy a keg of 5744!   ;D ;D

IIRC, 100% trail boss in the 45-120 under a 405 Lee HB .459 was 33 grains.   Your max. load probably around 40 grains so maybe 28 grains for a start load in your 50-140?

Well, the bullets showed up today, unfortunately they don't measure up, the best I can get out of em is .5115"-.512", so I still don't know if a .515" will chamber, but the good news is I used one of em as a slug and it clearly shows that the groove diameter is definitely smaller than .512" as lead was removed from the entire bullet bearing surface, not just at the lands. With the slug wrapped with the .0025" feeler gauge blade, the biggest measurement I can get is .5145" which makes the groove diameter .5095", perfect for .510" bullets as in .500 Nitro Express....or 50BMG!  :o 8)

Oh BTW.  I really like the 28 inch barrel!   ;D   And the crown looks perfect!  It's the old rounded style rather then the modern target crown and more pleasing to my old fashioned taste.   ;)
Im going to send JES my 45-120 barrel to cut, crown and mark and a 30-30 barrel to rechamber to 30-40.  That ought to keep me in Handi projects for a while!   :D

Richard,

Twist is 1:20",  I don't think Jesse does rechambers without a rebore, seems to me I asked him about it, it would be nice if he does tho.

Actually that sounds reasonable since he had to rent the chamber reamer for our barrels...  :-\

Oh well, another problem.  I wanted to seat a primer to check the strike of the firing pin and I've bought the wrong shell holder!   ::)   It's a RCBS #31 I think and it's spose to fit the 50-70 so I thought it would fit the 50-140... WRONG!!!

Anyone know what size shell holder will work?   ???

BTW, the primer fired fine.  A little off center but not enough to worry about!   ;D

Jesse does have reamers on hand, he had the 9.3x62, but had to rent the 376 Steyr, if he does other work like the cut and crown to a barrel, maybe he'll do a rechamber at the same time, won't hurt to ask him.

I'm using a Lyman #22, seems to work fine.  ;)

Got the 45-70 extractor modified, took a little off the bottom and a little off the tip of the post, works great now! Got the barrel fitted to the frame and workin on a trigger job now, came up from the man cave for a little rest! :-X

EDIT: Swapped out scope and rings to Leupold Vari-XIIc 1-4x20 in low Burris Zee rings.

LT, that .510 in a .512 should work OK, a lot (a LOT) of typical good shooting jacketed bullet rifles have bullet to bore tolerances not unlike that and guys dont know it. As said, it may chamber up loaded with the .515s, but I wouldnt think he would have made you that sloppy a chamber.

Richard, I say start at an 80% charge of TB, 70% is just too puny, and work your way up. I dont know as if TB is really any more expensive (well, I bought it in the 5# keg, way better than buying little cans) because it is so bulky, but Im only shooting normal big stuff (like my 45-70).

Had to postpone the 600gr SPGC loads, they won't be cast until next week, in the mean time Cabelas had Hornady 570gr DGS and DGX on sale for about half price, so I got a box of the DGS and loaded em up with H4350 today, I had some problems with too much runout at .007" using the RCBS seater die, switched to the Lyman and reduced it to .003", the seater plug has a little more taper to it, so it centers the bullet better, I also seated the bullet in 4 steps  rotating the round 90º each step instead of the usual 180º, that didn't work with the RCBS seater, but worked good with the Lyman.

Case capacity of a sized case is 149.2gr H2o, so it has more case capacity than the 500NE, QL says a 95% load density of H4350 will push the 570gr bullet over 2200fps, so we shall see, recoil for my max load will be over 90lbs, reduced to around 30lbs in the leadsled of course.  ;D  Range report later this week or next depending on the weather.

Ok, here ya go boys, spent the morning at the range, only took two rifles, the 50-140 and 499HE. First of all, I reconsidered the Omega scope's weight and swapped it out for a Leupold Vari-XIIc 1-4x20 in low Burris Zee rings, it's not as clear as the Omega, but worked fine. I shot one round of my start load at 25yds and adjusted the scope accordingly, then moved the sled over to the 100yd range and shot two more of the same load, that's the first target below, the second load of 101gr opened up a lot, but I think that's because the barrel is new and was getting copper fouled, so I started cleaning after every other two shot group, groups kept up like that only not as tight as the first group, they varied from 1½" to 3". When I got to 110gr, I was rewarded with another ½" group at a shade over 2200fps.  ;D As expected, the recoil is significant, when I was half way thru my loads I had to slide the PAST Magnum shoulder pad on, even with 25lbs of lead on the sled it was getting unbearable, at 110gr I quit still having 3 more loads up to 113gr to test, but decided I didn't really need or want to shoot em! ::)

Tim

ps..... Primers still had rounded shoulders and the brass showed no sign of excess pressure, easily extracted, so there's room for improved velocity, but not by me any time soon.  ???

EDIT: Primer pockets still nice and tight after cleaning the brass.

have any of you guys tried military surplus powder. like WC860/WC872 . its cheap and very slow i shoot allot of it in my 45-70. you cant put enough in  a 45-70 with a 530 grain bullet to cause over pressure.

Ya know, I think that would be acceptable accuracy for a DG rifle...  :-\  'specially when you consider with 2 bullets touching you have a 1 inch group!   ;D

:o :o :o  WOW!!!  That beats the 500 NE's nominal 2150!!!  That would be my full house load right there!  No if's,and's or but's!   ;)  That's what I'm going to shoot for!  Bet it'll be fun off the bench...  ::)

My teeth hurt just thinking about shooting a 50-140"Sharps Express".   Since screwing up my shoulder changing water heaters a few months ago I haven't been even able to enjoy lower level 2 45-70's.  My 45-120 has definitely been off limits for sakes of my shoulder and neck.

Thanks Richard, I'll do a follow-up range trip as soon as the bruise goes away!!  ::) :-[ ;D It's not as bad as the 9.3x62 did me tho, that little puppy really whipped me, Since I have to make two trips down the hill into the pit with the sled, I'll take it on the next trip also, gotta get it ready for deer huntin. Next load for the 50-140 will be 300gr Barnes at about 3000fps, they be really tough to seat since they're so short, they tipped too much before entering the seater die, were a real PITA, I had to use the expander die to slightly enlarge the case mouth so they'd stand straight on the case, otherwise they'd tip sideways, then crimp to get rid of the slight bell so they'd chamber.  :-\
