Squirrel Hunting with my H&R Sportster

Our season, here in Indiana, opened Aug. 15.  Finally got out Sat. and Sun. for some hunts.  My son came up Tues. to hunt with the ole man.  Have gotten some and missed a couple.  All in all, I'm having a blast hunting with the little single shot .22.  Most of the squirrels have been head shot, and all of them are 1 shot kills.  Here's a few pics for you boys that like to hunt "limb chickens".   ;D

Congrats, just 20 more days here to go...  We like to refer to 'em as tree rats or oakus ratificus if you need to sound more intelligent (without being so admittedly).  ;)

Our season opens later here in Ontario... but those pics are making me hungry! The Sportster HM2 and a pair of Savage M2's are the go to squirrel guns these days... zeroed at 75 yards they are never more than 3/8" high/low from 25 yards to 85 yards... so the question is do I aim at the top of the eyeball or the bottom of the eyeball! ;D

Nice, we dealt with the wind today also. We only saw one grey but he was out of range, the area where we went got logged recently so we need more time to figure out where the new hot spots are.
My boy did shoot a couple reds, not much meat on those little guys but we cooked them anyway. It was a fun day in the woods regardless.

Haven't posted for a while, but I have been doing a quite a bit of hunting.  Mostly with the Sportster.  I fixed up something to help my accuracy while hunting, a shooting walking stick with a U shaped tool holder screwed into the top.  Got 4 this am.  Shoulda been 5, but I got in too big a hurry on the last one and missed... ::)

Great to hear the stories guys!!

Our season opened on the 1st and I haven't been in the woods...yet! Momma seems to have a larger fall honey do list this season... ::) ;)

I have got 3-4 tree rats here around the house tho. ::)  But not with a handi.. with a Chrosman 760!! Made a nice shot last Friday, at about 35 yards, open sites in the head and again last evening. Running down the fence and made the mistake to stop at the corner... bang flop.

That's a nice shot CW! I might pick a 760 at some point for around the house duty. I've been using my son's Crickett .22 with Aguila Super Colibris for tree rats in the yard. It does the job.

I can't wait to get out in the squirrel woods again, though. I'll be busy next weekend but the weekend after that I'll be back out there. I got skunked last time I went out. I got busted by a fat grey and he took off running before I could get a clean shot.

I haven't gotten out there yet... WAS gonna Saturday, but that was squashed as I have 14 trucks to inspect... :o Oh well filling the suffering bank account is more important and keeps momma happier!!

BUT I AM shooting them in the back yard!!! But sadly not with the H&R... a Old Winchester 67 with CB's is doing a rite fine job. ;)

Got out last weekend, late in the morning.  Hit a new little woods[3-4 acres], that i bet hadn't been squirrel hunted in over a decade.  Had 3 in about 45 minutes.  Started getting windy, and I quit.

Well, after getting a coupla deer for the freezer, I got back after the "limb chickens", last weekend.  Nice day that got near 60 degrees.  Went hunting late Sat. am.  Within 45 minutes I had three fox squirrels.

Our deer season is almost over, and I had planned in doing some small game with the sportster. But we have such a problem with coyotes I have not seen a single squirrel all season!!!

I'll have the Maggie and 223 out lookin for song dogs first!!

Where did you get the .22LR ammo stock holder for the sportster?

The shell holder was originally on my Ruger No. 1 375 H&H mag, that I took to Africa.  I knew I wasn't going to be using it anytime soon, so I took it to a buddy that runs a tack/leather shop.  I took him 2 rounds of .22 ammo.  He sewed it across the middle, then sewed the loops up and down to hold the .22 shells.  It cost me $8 to get it done.  I love it! ;D
