scope bases

I need to get a couple of scope bases for two of my rifles.   One is the 45/70 and the other 243.    I put the weaver #82 on the 45/70 and don't really care for how much it hangs over the barrel so now I want to replace that.   Should I go with a steel base and if so would I need to match that up with steel rings?   The leupold seems pretty inexpensive though but if the steel is better I guess it is worth the couple of extra dollars?   So I am just looking for some thoughts between the h&r, leupold and the warne bases since these look like the only 3 choices out there.  thanks again guy.

All scope base options are shown in the FAQs, there are a lot more than just the three you mention.    I use more Leupold and H&R than any other tho.

Generally speaking, I also like the idea of steel bases. I do use them on my bigger calibers in the handi's too. But find that the old "ultra" base works just fine too.

Most guys do not like the 82 Weaver base as it comes out of the package. Unless your gonna mount a Simmons shotgun scope. Then its a great thing!  Tim has bone a dang up job putting a ton of info together in the FAQ's and like Ragu, it in there!!

So unless you are gonna shoot some real heavy loads form say a 45-70, 454 Cassull, 500 S&W and maybe 35 Whelen. A stock or modified 82 base will likely be just fine for you.
