Another 41 Bisley BH Christening
« on: December 01, 2012, 03:08:52 PM »
Went to my local hunting establishment.  Took the 41mag Bisley out for a test run on a hog.  Got a 175 pounder...good eating size sow.  Used a 230gr SWC-HC-GC....wasn't all that pleased with the results.  I did get the hog, I did hit it 4 times and I do think I'm going to use a different bullet......

Cool video.  That last shot seemed to rock her pretty good.  What didn't you like about that bullet's results?  What are you thinking of trying different?

Good shooting Doug.  Took four shots to take him down, but I don't think you gave him time to fall over dead... ;D   Some pretty fast and accurate shooting..

My experience on hogs (though I have only shot a couple with a handgun), and big game in general, is that when using a hard cast semi-wadcutter / LFN type bullet, you seldom get DRT unless you hit the spine or brain.  Just a matter of waiting for the animal to bleed out.  An expanding bullet may transmit a little more shock, but at the expense of thru penetration and a good blood trail.  I'll bet a Barnes solid expanding bullet would be a good choice in the 41 mag on hogs, offering penetration and internal damage.

I've had great pass thru's using .41 mags with the Sierra Silhouette bullet.  It's jacket comes just up around the end of the ogive a shade.

Shoots completely thru bears, hogs, elk..................

I've also happily used a hard cast Keith style 230 grainer pushed by 19 gr of H110.

What was I expecting from the bullet?  Well I think I was expecting more knock down...I did get complete pass throughs though.  I guess the bullets did just fine.  I generally use XTPs for hunting and have had dramatic knock downs on everything including much heavier boar.   I do know the 1st and 2nd shots were heart lung, 3rd and 4th shoulder.  And I still needed a mercy shot which is in vid #2.  And it still tried to get away...  Will post that link if interested but it ain't pretty.

Which XTPs do you prefer?

I've only used them in the 44 and have had great luck with both the 240 and 300grainers.

Doug:  Way to go.  That was pretty good shooting; you don't have anything to second guess, and I have a good recipe for sausage for you if you want it......
I think your slugs did just what they were supposed to and your t&ts are evidence.  Were the shoulder shots pass throughs as well as the first two?  BTW, I have never met a cooperative hog, which is why I prefer to shoot them in the head and not have to listen to them complain about it.  I'm of Armenian extraction, remember?  We prefer the silence of the lambs......

Doug:  Only two pass throughs - hmmmm, I would have thought those heavy slugs would just have pushed right on through.  When you cleaned her up for the picture, what didja do - button her blouse and refresh her lipstick????  Ow!

From the angle I was shooting at, the exits were low and along the gut line.  Just used snow...

Nice shooting Doug!  Offhand shooting with iron sights is tough in the field - especially on moving game.  It's something I work hard on because I love to head out hunting with nothing but an iron sight revolver on my hip.  Congratulations on a successful hunt and thanks for sharing it!

Yes thanks for sharing the video and thoughts, as another 41 shooter I'm interested in performance and suggestions.  I'd even be curious to see the other video if there is something to learn from it. I carry the 250, 255 and 265 loads.  Shot 1 little caribou. Had similar non-reactions to several pass thrus that were poorly placed.  IN that case I should have had lighter jacketed bullets.  What bullet would you try next?  Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas All.....

DAND....the other vid is not pretty...a head shot with allot of flopping around.  Nothing to be learned...have alook at my site below in the hunting folder for WildHill 2012, the 2nd vid is there as well as another one with my pal Dave and his problems with the 257WBY and a lite bullet at under 40yards (also not pretty).  I think I'm going to use XTPs next time I hunt with the 41.  I have a 475Lindbaugh coming from Garry Reeder that I'll use next.  I'll shoot 480rugers in it and probably use the 325gr XTPs.  I suspect it will work just fine!

Not pretty but here it is:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXM4kmYR-1A

Also...here my friend Dave's pig shot with a 257wby Encore at 40yards....bullet needed to get out a bit further to be mode effective I think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOBqr6lRRz4
