Brass forend spacer
« on: March 01, 2013, 05:21:09 PM »
Ok so i have this friend that is a craftsman, tinkerer, and artist as well as a machinist.

I was talking to him tonight about making a brass forend spacer for my classic carbine and got to wondering if this would be something some here may be interested in. You know, if we got to a fair price for the buyer and seller.

That said, would yall be interested? And what would yall consider a "fair price"? He is gonna make mine and i will post pics when done. But just to get the conversation started... What say yall?

Good luck with that Joe, this is a path I've been down for many years, sent about a dozen plastic spacers to individuals and even Talley hoping to get em made, the only one to come thru has been Toth with matte steel. See the existing 8 page metal trigger guard and spacer FAQs thread for an idea of what members will pay.

Seems like Toth tool is charging $35 for steel spacers.  Since everyone seems to be cutting weight on these a lot, maybe anodized aluminum would be better.  Easier to work and longer tool life.  Plus could anodize in various colors.  ;)

Toth is selling the steel spacers for $20 (I just bought two)... I would probably go $30 for brass, but not likely more. This is the problem with doing them in brass, it becomes cost prohibitive... but it would sure look nice on a Walnut BC set or a Mannlicher with case colored receiver... well maybe $35...  :)

I have bought brass ones before. Ive got about ten of them.  Cant remember who its was that was making them. I think i found them on gunbroker.

I would think once a mold is made they could be made in copper or silver too. or nickel.

A copper one with a copper butt plate on my walnut would be purdy.

There have been some on ebay too, but they didn't last any longer than the GB spacers, they prolly made a batch, sold em and decided it was too much work. Personally I think adding a metal spacer requires a matching metal trigger guard too, plastic and brass just don't cut it for me, but what ever works for ya.  ;)

I have extras Joe if ya want me ta send ya one, otherwise see the trigger hone info in the FAQs, the two lower pins need to be knocked out right to left due to being splined on the left side, you'll need a slave pin also, a hammer wedge is real handy for reinstalling as well.

Im gonna talk to him. If this piece isnt too costly or too much of a project for him, i may get you to send me one. I'll look at the how to for pics to show him. Those parts in brass would really be sweet on my CC.

This may get expensive. Ha

I have a brass one from a while back.  Rough casting but smooth in the outside where it is visible.  Also two Toth steel, very well made and finished, and fit well.  Toth is way better made.  I got them to use with a steel muzzle loader trigger guard I still have to install.  They aren't that heavy.

They're no longer made, you wouldn't want em anyway, they're poorly made and don't fit right.  :(

I made a spacer for myself out of aluminum a couple of years ago.

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,229608.msg1099276986.html#msg1099276986

Did it on a manual machine and since I'm not versed in CNC, I don't know how much faster that would be.  They would surely need to make quite a few to warrant the setup.

It took me about an hour to make one.  Now that I've done it, I could cut that down some.  The price of brass has really gone through the roof.  Add the cost of material to the labor involved and expecting to buy them under $30-35 dollars is not very realistic.

You can make  awesome form fitting spacers by putting your handy upside down in a gun vice with the forearm removed and putting a good bead of black silicon for and aft of the stud, then lay wax paper on the silicon and install your forearm but don't tighten the screw all the way, about 3/4 of a turn out. When the silicon dries trim the excess wax paper off along with any overage of silicon and you are set. I personally prefer the plastic spacer at the back of the forend not touch the action so I sand it till it doesn't touch the action. This has worked so well for me I recommend it to all.
