30-30 Ackley Improved
« on: March 17, 2004, 01:22:09 PM »
I went to the range today,in the snow, to sight in a new barrel that I just put a scoe on last night. Its a super 14 30-30 AI barrel that I got nib from Eds TC made some for Midway.I shot it this past weekend with open sights and it shot really good but the scope is the test for me.No excuses.
With a load that I got from A guy on the web KYOTE it shot a group of 5/8 in at 100yds.If anyone is looking for something different to have this is the one to get.I will try some other loads but if this is as good as it gets I am happy.I shot a130gr bullets thats going around 2600fps according to what I read(Ihavent chronographed it yet).It doesnt recoil anymore than my 10" 7tcu does and fireforming it is a breeze.I used bullseye and cornmeal. How much "Improvement" can one expect from the Ackley over the 30-30 in a 14" Contender?  I am happy with my 30-30, but if I can get more, without spending a lot more, then I may want to try it.  Any downside/ risks, other than the cost of the rechamber?

thanx-

If you want toread a really good arcticle on the 30-303-AI go to handgunhunt.com  or the arcticles in boartuffoutdoors.com  Thereis an arcticle by Larry Sands that goes over all the loads and performance.I would do the conversion. It will keep up with the 309 JDJ up to 150 gr bullets with mild recoil and less powder burnt.Ackley did alot of "IMPROVED" stuff and most of them didnt show much difference from the parent brass. The 30-30 is  the exception all the gun writers say this as well.It has a 40 degree shoulder which is moved forward giving you like a 3-4 grain capacity increase.I am loading 33gr 4198 with a 130gr hornady goes 2590fps I could go up 1 gr yet according to Ackley. So at max load it will be well over2600fps.I dont know what t the best a std. 30-30 can do is but I would guess its 2100-2200 fps with a 130.  READ those articles and let me know what you think. I know were to get the dies for it.SSK will rechamber for 75 dollars.

While I can’t give you any numbers, I know KYODE and he has me sold on the .30-30AI too.   It will be my next purchase.

I have read nothing but good about it and several people have said they love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything.  Go to boartuffoutdoors.com, they have a lot to say about it.   Everyone over there seems to just love it.
