Help, straight scoop on the 30-30 AI
« on: October 08, 2004, 11:40:03 AM »
For the last week or so I've used the search function on this forum to find  30-30 AI load info and found quite a bit. Also hounded most of the bullet and powder makers for load info, and not much help there. I read SD Handgunner's article (at least I think he wrote it) at Handgun Hunting Magazine and found it very informative. One thing that caught my attention was the comment that his load was one grain less than P.O.'s max load. Could anyone list Ackley's load for this. If I remember correctly it was for IMR 4198 and 125 grain bullet.  Kinda like to know the starting load and the Max. load. Does he list any pressures in his book? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Oscar-eleven

Thank you! Did anyone but Ackley ever publish data for his rounds?

Oh yeah, there is lots of data out there espically for the more common calibers (.30-30, .223, .22-250 etc...). Really, you can eaisly work up your own data and just watch for pressure signs. You'll be doing it any way (if you are a safe loader you will) and watching the head expansion and primers you can usually judge when you've hit the max.

I'd like to thank SD Handgunner and Kyode for all the info they have posted on the 30-30 A.I., it'll be a big help. Thanks again Mr. Reed, I ordered Ackley's book(s). Oscar-eleven

you are very welcome. :D  still everyone should take care/caution in loading their own ammo, for their own barrel.

Just to make sure, thought it's probably a moot point, those loads from P.O. Ackley are the max loads listed, not the starting. Reduce them by 10-15% for starting loads.

I'm still waiting for all my "stuff" to arrive. Case trimming parts for the A.I. are waiting for the 204 Ruger dies to come in before being shipped. The scope is on back order from another company. So it will be awhile before I get around to the reloading but I'll definitely heed your advice and start low and work my way up. It looks like I'd be foolish not to start with the 4198 but I might try some VV133 also. Thanks again, Oscar-eleven

AA2015, RL-7, h4198, and IMR4198 are definately good places to start. 130gr hornady's.....125gr sierra's, and 125gr nosler bt's.......as well as some 150gr bullets are good to try. :-)

actually several powders and bullets have potential, or have showed potential to do well in the 30-30AI. :?
