Simmons--see their website.  I like the 3x9 on the .243.  Burris for a real fine one.........

Zach, if this is for Deer hunting, a good 3-9x40 scope is all you need, one of the best, practical priced scopes is the Nikon Prostaff at The Optic Zone for $135. Or if you would like an Illuminated dot reticle, the Mueller Sport Dot is an excellent choice for the same money.

I like a 3-9 X40 Simmons, but that may be because that is what I put on a 243. It works very well.  With the light recoil of the 243 many, many scopes will work just fine.

I have a HB .243 Handi on order.  After considering many scopes, I ordered a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-14AOx40 for it from TheOpticZone.  The Bushnell arrived today.  Wow am I impressed!  It exudes quality and has both good magnification and a good field of view.  Its size is reasonable, too.

Best of all, TheOpticZone's price was only $239.  Cabellas wants $289.99 for the same scope.

Do a search on the Optics forum.  You'll find lots of good things about the Bushnell Elite 3200s.

Sorry Mainer, I'm a flatlander and always will be, can't change that or where I was born. Actually if the truth be known, when I was born I was to young to have much say about where it would happen, of course my father was overseas fighting in Europe at the time so he didn't have much say in it either, but thankfully he came back pretty much like he left. Been visiting Maine for 60 years and have to go south from my camp to get to Bangor,  but $239.00 for a scope, WOW!!! I thought you must be from away!!!....<><.... :-D

There are some of us who live neither in Portland, nor on the coast, but who have ample education and adequate finances (not to mention a healthy assortment firearms  ).  But, quiet, don't mention any of that to the greater-Portland-crowd .  They think they inhabit the center of the universe.

Mainer, nice scope and an excellent source! But I think you'll find it's a 4-12x40AO not a 4-14x40AO....

For $239 you might want to check eBay for Leupold auctions.  I've seen some deals there and Leupold will honor their lifetime warranty no matter how you got the scope.

eBay item # 7124336853 is a VX-IIc 3-9x40 thats at just over $200 with just over 4 hours to go as I type this.

Heck, you can get a brand new Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 for $200 or 4-12x40 for $250 at GBO sponsor Midsouth Shooters Supply.

I'll second the Leupolds...but not the Rifleman series...the ones I've looked thru  at Walley World..just didn't seem up to Leupolds high standards...but...for a better scope(IMHO)...the VX-1 series is a great buy...just slightly more but..worth every penny...I traded a basicly brand  new VX-3 3.5-10x40 back to my gun shop for 2 of the VX-1's...and couldn't be happier...

Trapperzack:  Negative on switching the scopes.  The .223 Handi I have is a short range gun, only good out to 250 yards.  My .243 Handi will reach out and touch things to 500 yards and beyond.  My typical shots are made at 300 to 500 yards.  My .243 is my backup gun for my 30-06 Handi.  The 6X18X50 is a good scope for the .243, too much scope for a .223.  This is my openion from shooting the Handi's I have.  I have a Bushnell 6X24X40 on my .243, it works great for making long shots.  The only problem with it is the 40mm objective lens is not big enough to gather enough light at the 24 power on overcast days.  I have to back the power down then.  A 50mm objective lens is much better at collecting light.

Mainer, you mentioned (shudder) Portland, isn't that where they have that socialist, liberal, Chief of Police that hates guns? And to think he came to Maine from Pennsylvania, another hunting mecca!!!....<><....

I have to offer a different opinion on the higher power scope for the .223. If you have good optics on your higher power scope, it will work fine. One of the bad characteristics of inexpensive optics is they tend to offer a rather dim view on the higher powers. This is true for all optics, but to a greater degree with the low end products. I've got a 5-20x40 Tasco EuroClass, Japan built by LOW scope on my .223 and it is bright pretty much throughout the power range, dims slightly on 18x-20x but is still plenty useful even under overcast skies, which living here in the pacific NW, I know plenty about! I also have a Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25x50IGR on my .243 Ultra Varmint, it's also plenty bright under all conditions, but it has a 50mm objective which on a handi isn't an issue due to the need to mount higher for hammer clearance.

If you're just shooting Varmints or even coyotes, the .223 has plenty of power for killing at ranges well beyond 250yds, specially shooting the win white box 45gr JHP which is unanimously selected as the best shooting ammo in general for the .223 H&R rifles. With a 200yd zero, it is only 1.2" high at 100yds, and 6.7" low at 300yds with a retained energy of 434 ft/lbs.

I placed a Nikon 4x32 Prostaff fixed power scope on my super light .243 Handi rifle.  It a good package together.
