45-70 "Mannlicher" Range Report
« on: April 06, 2005, 05:16:08 PM »
I also shot my 45-70 with the mannlicher forend and williams peep/firesight combo today, 100yd group is just a shade over 2", even with sight adjustments! Shot #3 was an overcorrected attempt to get the POI centered, #1 and #2 are without adjustment, #4 is after the final adjustment. The center white section of the target is 4" in diameter.  I'm shooting the 350gr Hornady RN and 28gr of 2400, a favored Handi-holic 45-70 load  . I had to sand the right side of the forend barrel channel to lighten the pressure on the right side of the barrel, then I added a pressure pad in the barrel channel to center the forend on the barrel, it worked great!! Last time I shot it with the same load, it didn't group well at all, even at 25yds.

QUICK,

What height shorty ramp & firesight are you using on that beast (I have a 3/8 which a gunsmith buggered up the drill/tap job  & a number of firesights .250, .406 & .375. have to have another hole drilled & screw obtained  ). I have a mannlicher fore end I got with my 357 barrel & was thinking of putting it on my 45/70 or a 30-30 if one comes up or even the 357.

Hope mine shoots as well, or at least it will but can I??
Good shootin Quick

Pressure pad

Just wanting to learn more "how to" on the "pressure pad", you refer to.  Mostly location in the channel, and the nature of the pad.   We're out at the cabin for a few days and are likely going to do some .45-70 shooting too with the BC.  You've got my curiousity up besides "flinging a craving" on me.

One Hole 4570, the front ramp is a 9/32" high shorty ramp for an .815" barrel with a 3/8" tall firesight insert. No, I didn't have to change the mount hole, mine has the 6x48 mount screw hole. The older barrels have a smaller hole.

Stuffit, I used a piece of crocus cloth because it seemed to be the right thickness and is was handy. Now that I know it works, I'm going to replace it with a piece of a refrigerator magnet because it's kinda rubber like and thin enough @ .025". The piece is 1½" long x 1" wide and placed 4½" from the muzzle, long way with the barrel. It can be seen but only if you look for it.

Mine is an older barrel with the little screw hole, I'm going to take it to another smith tomorrow & have it redone no more work to the this fellow.
How much vertical adjustment do you have left on you peep sight. With your heights looks like i'll need a .290, might be able to get away with the .250 if there is enough down adjustment :?  I will get this worked out in time & $$. Shot real well with a scope but I do not like scopes on a fast handling large caliber rifle, prefer peeps

It's right at the second from the top long index mark of the ramp, so if you wanted to use a slightly lower ramp or insert on the front sight, you could, but, I'm shooting 350gr bullets at approx 1500fps and hitting point of aim, so I wouldn't use too much lower front sight. It also depends on your stock comb height, If I had a straight stock, I'd probably want the rear sight a bit lower on the ramp, but I have a laminated wood stock which is just right the way it is now....and just an FYI, the comb height of the monte carlo stocks is not the same for all Handi rifles, when I was swapping stocks on this rifle, the original stock off another Handi was way too high for me to look thru the peep aperture, comparing this stock to that one, there was approx 3/8" difference in the height, so H&R has changed their stock design sometime.

Thanks Quick,
I think I will try the 250 & look at some of my combed  stocks to see which fits. I have a brown youth laminent on it now good for the cold (not so cold now) so I may switch it out to a std length when I get it back from the smith.

I'm shooting 300 gr2100 fps & 405 gr about  & 1450fps
