Review of two Mueller scopes 3x10x44 and 4x16x50
« on: May 14, 2005, 12:35:18 AM »
I have two Mueller scopes. I purhcaced the 4x16x50 last october and put it on my Thompson Encore in 270. I used that rifle for hunting the next 3 months. I did not post a review earlier because I was not satisfied with how it performed. I had talked with the people at Mueller who tried to tell me it might not be the best scope for my hunting needs. I was over scoped on the gun. They were correct. I should have went with the 3X10X44 instead. The 4X16 did very well off the bench when I had time to move the adjustments for clarity. But on a hunting rifle that saw a lot of fast shooting at many diffrent ranges it seemed always to be set at the wrong place for the target I encounterd. I also thought the scope was not very good in extreamly low light. I did hunt at night with this scope and just did not get what I was expecting. The red dot was the saving grace for me. I chose the wrong scope for the job at hand. The 4x16 needs adjusted carefully for diffrent ranges and power settings to be optimally clear. I could not do this quickly under pressure needing to get the shot off fast. I feel that 4x16 scope was of very good quality for the dollar spent. I still dont think it was bright enough in low light.  Enough about that scope. I still liked the Mueller scope line and when I picked up a diffrent rifle this month my first choice was another Mueller. Only this time I paid attention to the advise I was given last year and got the 3X10X44 sport dot. This scope does not have the adjustable objective and the power is within reason for a long range hunting rifle in 30-06. I like this scope very much.  I just focused the eye piece and forget about it. I find the scope to be focused and clear through the range of power. I like to use the scope on 3x for most hunting. I am very satisfied with this scope. It is just about the (perfect scope) for a hunting rifle in its price range. I cant afford scopes that cost more than my rifles. I think Mueller has got it right with his scopes. Hi quality at affordable price. I like the one piece tube on the 3x10x44. I recommend both of the scopes I have tried. But they are very diffrent from each other and I suggest you dont over scope as I did. Both very good scopes. I think I would recommend the 3X10X44 sport dot over the larger 4x16x50 for general use. I want to get the Eraticator for my next Mueller purchace. I dont have a rifle to put it on yet but at the price they are selling for I will hold on to it until I decide what to put it on. I am favorably impressed with Mueller scopes.
I would like to know what the light transmission number is for these scopes. Does anyone out there know?  I love the 3x10x44.
I put that scope on a new Mossberg ATR 100 in 30-06. I posted that range test in the rifle forum. If you want to know how that rifle shoots check it out.

Sorry if I missed it but how pleased were you with the 3x10 in very low light situations. I have a 243 I am planning on putting a  mueller on it I was almost sold on the 4x16 until your review but now am considering more the  3x10 but wondering about almost night shooting.

More info on 3x10x44 for camsdaddy

Hello. I am very pleased with the 3x10x44 in low light. It is a very agood scope for my 3006 hunting/truck rifle. I see much better with it in the dark. There dosnt seem to be nearly as much glare when you have a light behind you. I am very glad I posted my experience. If you need fast shots in low light then DO NOT put on the 4x16. I liked the 4x16 but it works best when you have time to make adjustments. You will not regret going with the 3x10x44 scope. If you are prarie doggin during the daylight off the bench have time to adjust a scope the 4x16x50 in my humble (very humble) opinion is ok. I could always tell the MUELLER scopes were of very good quality. I just chose wrong for my needs. If your needs are like mine then get the 3x10x44.

I DONT WANT ANYONE TO GET THE WRONG IDEA!

I like the Mueller scopes very much. I just chose the wrong scope for the job on that particular rifle.  I hope this will save you some agrivation and some money. It is always nice to learn from someone elses mistake.

Didnt take it as a slam to mueller (I think it would be the first neg. comment yet) but I am glad you made your point. I plan on doing some bench shooting but this will be mostly my truck/coyote/deer/????? gun and I think fast target aquisition is prob more important to me than extra zoom though I do like to pull things in quite a bit. I want something I can use to allow me to set until last light and would like to be able to shoot yotes in moonlight if need be. Thanks again for your comment alot of time we just go for the biggest and baddest when moderation would suit us better. I guess I dont need that 897 remchesterger magnum to squirrels either.

Grubbs,
If you would like to get a "real" answer and better understand our process of sourcing, please visit:
http://www.chuckhawks.com/mueller_eraticator_8-25x50_syn.htm

We are currently working with a new factory and expect to release a new model shortly that will rival many higher end scopes and at a lesser price.
This new scope will be made in Japan and the demos have already knocked the socks off those who have reviewed it....

I'm interesting in the new model.  Is it the same magnification range?  I greatly favor eye relief over FOV.  Does MO have any plans to increase the eye relief on any of its mid-range power scopes?  If yes, then I would seriously consider buying one.

Good deal!!!!!!!  Now I might just give one of those a try!  Just curious......why did you choose to manufacture in Japan after already having a commitment in China?

There was no other way to offer the quality of our current line with-out using the sources we did. Now we are working on stepping it up a notch to meet the demands of the next level of users.

Our long term goal is to cover a much broader range including higher end models and we are still only in the initial stages.

this is in no way meant to be a slam at Mueller, but I've never met a scope made in China that I liked.  Glad to see the switch to Japan coming.

Why is the eye relief so low at 3.3"?  I personally love my Elite 4200s and 3200s, but most of the 3200s that I was looking at had about the same eye relief - 3.3" so I passed on them without looking twice when considering a scope for my Kimber in .300WSM.  As such, I spent a lot more money so that I could get the Leupold (of which many people know that I think are overrated and overpriced) just because it had eye relief up to 4.4"!!

I know that there is a trade off between FOV and eye relief, but it seems that the majority of manufacturers build scopes in favor of FOV, yet it seems to me that most people prefer eye relief.  The Zeiss Conquest 3x-9x-40mm has 4" of CONSTANT eye relief.  That's a blessing!

Your thoughts?

Zachary,
I'm showing the more comparable 3-10x44 Zeiss having a constant eye-relief of 3.5" which is a difference of only .2
Being that our new scope is somewhat variable, you will still be able to obtain a full view at 3.5" too...

All other specs are very comparable.

Giving up FOV so it's smaller than comparable models, would not be benificial as far as a marketing standpoint although I do understand your personal interest in a longer eye-relief.

Just out of curiosity I am currently saving my nickels to buy a 3-10x44 and I am wondering if the "cheap" model will continue to be available or will they all be in the $350 range.

Cool and I apologize for using the "C" word in business it is such a dirty word. I would also like to say that the reason I am getting a Mueller is your interaction hear and price vs quality. It is amazing to have a product that is affordable that you rarely find negative input. Thanks for making a scope for those of us who cant afford the "premium" priced scopes.

I do understand the marketing logic of stressing field of view over eye relief as many novice shooters look at those specs. the most but it sure
would be nice if we could get a little extra eye relief with the 2 X 7 Multi- shot.
I would go for it even if it was offered as an additional cost option within
reason. I believe this would create a whole new market for this scope for
big bore/ dangerous game rifles & harder kicking shotguns. I wanted to
put this scope on my 450 Marlin last fall, but chose another because of
eye relief alone. Otherwise, this scope is perfect for these roles.

funny i'am 6'5  and use it the 2x7 multi shot on a  3.5 inch turkey gun with 13 length of pull, and a 45/70 guide gun with buffalo and garret bullets no issue with relief

Deputy
Thanks for the info. I merely read the specs. before I made my decision.
I had no Multishot to look at. This makes me wonder if they only showed
the least eye relief which should be at 7X and usually when I use the higher power I typically have time to adjust.  Maybe Mueller can tell us. No
doubt both of these guns should tell the tale. My brother has one of these
Mossbergs & I feel it more than the rifles.

I have the Multi-shot 2-7x32 mounted on my 835 Ulti-mag, I'd have to say that the eye relief on 2x is close to 4" if not a bit more....

I hate to reopen this I hope it dosent swing back political. I am wanting to know which of the muellers would be my best choice for deer, coyotes in the dark and load develpment and target shooting. I will be putting this on a 243 ultra handi I plan on yote sniping during full moons. Any help I just need to narrow down between the 3 3x9, 3x10x 4x16
thanks

I think I may have just made up my mind. I think I will go with the 3x9 and buy me a range finder. I just took a stupid shot at a yote I had no idea the entire field in front of my house was 450+ yds and he was prob 300yds + I had no idea I think I could have hit him had I not been so excited to get to shoot at one with my new rifle, and to think up until a few min ago it had never missed an animal. It looks like I am out for some target practice and as soon as they are done bailing hay I am going to get me some dif color flags. I thought that my fence as a rest would be better than getting closer and didnt wait for him to turn broadside put on center of his chest and kaboom #$^$/ I knew better now Im just mad at myself. sorry for sliding off topic just had to vent
