Remington date codes

Remington Owners,

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

* the years 1943 though 1953 had double letters: ie, MM = 1943

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.

Hey Jeff;
             In your message you say, "the first letter"....I'm probably reading into things too much or I'm a brick short of a load but do you mean one would read from left to right as opposed to the first number closest to the receiver? Exapmle: 20 EI would be 10 month & 76 or 88. I bought a well used Remm 1100 LW in 20ga. and am trying to date it. Thanks for posting this information. The remington web page was of little help.

That one is surely puzzling and it certainly does not any parameters that I am aware of...

Thanks for replying to my question. I am glad to see that you agree with my decode. Now to figure out if its '76 or '88. Humm....The serial # has an Alpha prefix and suffix. I believe the Remington site does give some information regarding spare barrels and serial numbers.  I'll check there. Thx again.            Bruce

I guess that a resent purchase with in a couple years my 300 RUMs action  was made in 1987.

I have a Remington 700 BDL Varmint in triple duece.  I purchased it a few weeks ago though it is in like new condition. It as an aluminum but plate, a safety lever that has flats on front and back and is slightly taller that the more current safeties. It also does not have a jeweled bolt, serial number is inthe lower 300,000 range. and ports an early K12 Weaver scope on redfield rings and bases.  The barrel code is ULRA. Now U doesn't fit in with the month code which is the first part of the date. It is however a mark that Remington uses on the bases of its .22 ammo. So I am going to assume it is Remington mark for what reason they only know. I am only guessing that the last letter is an A as  there is only the upper part  of the A , I guess the guy holding the stamp didn't hold it at right angle to the barrel surface. The other features of this sweet shooting little honey shows that it is an earlier model 700, Putting all that together I would put my rifle coming out of the factory in February of 1968. Likely made about the same time the Marines were buying this very rifle in .308 and making the legendary M40 series sniper rifles.

I was wondering about the markings on the left hand side of my 700. I would presume it was made in 1984.
The markings are: U,  O (looks like this was double stamped because the second stamp was a little bit off to one side), the third character I can not make out and then 84.
The serial # is 64XXXXX
Can someone make anything of this.

My XR100 is marked "cz", no wonder it shoots so well!!

It has codes up to 2007.

Maybe I'm misreading something, but the sticky here skips "V" for 2001 and instead has 2001 marked "W."  The Remington Society page has 2001 labeled as "V", 2002 as "W".  Looks like a typo in the sticky?

something looks fishy, thats about 12 years before the caliber was even introduced

It isn't that the person holding the punch did it wrong.

It that the punch was made that way.

Not everything that Remington put on the barrels was a exact science like they proclaimed.

If it has more than 4 characters - then it was sent back and re proofed after it was repaired at the factory.

The little stamps on the other side of the barrel are also of importance also.

There is a picture graph at Grice Gun Shop in Clearfield that they use to identify guns when they appraise them - before they purchase them from a seller.

The little birdies and butterflies and such are month codes also - along with plant codes.

If you go to the Remington Society page and look it up - they will tell you that there was a period of time   ( 8 / 9 / 99  - 10 / 01 / 2001 ) was them dates of manufacturer that did not have the stamps.

The 4th number on the end is the Final Inspection

The 3rd number is the Month

The second number is the YEAR

The first number is the Assembly

On the other side is the Magnaflux and the Proof Mark and the Test Mark!

REP is the Proof Mark and at one time it stood for Richard E. Perkins , the man that test fired the weapons for Remington.

On the first site you can also look up serial numbers by date from the FACTORY RECORD BOOK.

I just hope that you have a fast modem or DSL because it starts with the model 1 and goes from there the whole way to the end.

All hand written and you can only look at it one page at a time.

You have to start at the beginning and go the whole way to the end - say if you want a Model 700 - you might have to look at 700 pages before you get to your rifle's serial number.

My 513T has gobbeldy-gook where the date code should be.  An anchor or shield and something else. If I post a picture will somone translate it for me?

No letter(s) precede the serial number on my Remington BDL 700. Only six numbers. So, how can I date my rifle? I bought it used in the early 70s.

According to an article in the 2008 Gun Digest, the date codes for the M-700 Limited Edition Classics is slightly different, with the "A" code meaning 1995, ILO 1980.

B - 1981, C - 1982, D - 1983, E - 1984, F - 1985, G - 1986, H - 1987, I  - 1988, J  - 1989, K - 1990,
L - 1991, M - 1992, N - 1993, O - 1994, P - 1995, Q - 1996, R - 1997, S - 1998, T - 1999, U - 2000,
W - 2001, X - 2002, Y - 2003, Z - 2004, A - 2005.

my 700 adl has a code but it's too faint to see. there is a very clear large "64" next to the 3 faint letters. the reciever has a 6 number serial no., with no letters. does the 64 mean anything? how can i make the barrel code stand out?
