100 gr. bullets in .243 Win. Handi?
« on: May 28, 2005, 02:36:29 AM »
I'm considering a NEF Ultra Varmint Rifle in .243 Win.(SB2-843). I see that these rifles in .243 Win. have a 1 in 10" rate of twist.

How do they shoot 100 gr. bullets? Is the 1 in 10" twist adequate for heavier bullets or are they more suited for lighter wts.?

Thanks!

Leaf.

Welcome Leaf, In my opinion the 1 in 10 twist is about right for 100gr bullets, but I have better luck with 85 grain bullets, I use Sierra
 85 gr HPBT'S  1/4 inch gtoups. Datil

Except for the federals and pet loads?  Favorite powder for the 243?  I have the Sierra 85gr BTHP and a box of the Barnes Triple X on the way.

Want to get a head start with the Sierra loads and hunt with the Barnes if possible.

Welcome Aboard:D

Mine shoots the 95grain Nosler/Combined Technologies Ballistic SilverTips pretty good......not bad for just breaking the barrel in and shooting as fast as I could with it...the accuracy potintial is there...I just gotta find the time to get out and shoot it...

This one is 3 shots together on the line and 2 shots below...all the large squares are 1"..the small light blue grid squares are .10"..

Here's from my range report...on my 30-06 and this 243 24" bull barrel...the powder was Reloader 22... new Remington nickle cases...Remington 9-1/2 primers.. ...http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=62494&start=0#img_1834

Well with that group...it was back to the 243 Ultra Varmint...and my handloads...my forearm...was starting to get sloppyloose......and I needed to head home...so I switched the barrel off my custom stocked frame...and put it on the same one as it was fitted for from NEF and the 30-06 Ultra Comp...and commenced firing...the next 4 groups is as fast as I could pull the trigger and load and set...all done in 3-4 minutes...they aren't as good as I wanted...but I was more interested in function for them and testing...I have 4 different power weights...and used a CT ballistic ST at 95grains...just love those bullets...anyway...here they are..oh...the range master fired a couple off hand shots at my target...he liked the 243 very much...and is a pretty good shot...

Mine likes 100 gr Speer boat tails also. I don't have a pic of a 100 yd target but it was almost as good as this from 50.

Thanks Guys!!!! :D

I'm gonna pick one of these rifles up soon! When I'm done playin' with it I plan on makin' it a gift to a young fella (13 yr old)who I've known and hunted with for a couple of years. We've hunted wild hogs together and he's used an uncle's Rem. 788 in .243. He's also expressed some interest in huntin' some groundhogs so I thought a Handi Rifle in the same caliber might fit him well for both. He's a really well behaved and honorable young man. Unfortunately, that's a rare thing around here these days. Thought I would reward him for his good behavior.

Thanks again!

The local gunstore owner just loaded some 85gr Branes triple shock up for his daughter to hunt wild hogs.

She got a 200lb hog with one shoulder shot.  He dropped in his tracks.  Total pass through.  He said he thought the Barnes was overkill but she wanted them.

I figure if they will blow through the shoulders of a 200lb hog it ought to do anything on any deer I ever see.  Might be the ticket if I happen to see a black bear about 300lbs or less too.

As I've stated before, Sierra 85 grain BTHP bullets help provide me with  optimum downrange performance in my .243 Handi.
If at first you don't succeed, by all means try again. But if this doesn't work, give up, because there is no sense in making a darn fool of yourself.
