As some of you may remember, I had a new 44mag barrel fitted to my 45-70 receiver a few months ago and upon receiving it was SHOCKED to find that it was bored at .432 instead of the expected .429

In my quest to make this bugger shoot, I had to find some cast bullets that were sized .432. I found this one at Beartooth Bullets and decided the large meplat was an added bonus to the ability to purchase it sized to the dia. I needed.

The results from today's range trip show the results:

I think I have found my load for deer this year

Load was:

CCI 300
16.8gr. of 2400
265gr. LFP from Beartooth Bullets (sized .432)

to bad about the bore size, but congrats on your groups. Sure looks like a shooter now.

first off, good load development. good for you that you stuck with it....since that's one of the big lessons in life.

some may disagree, but i recommend that when shooting a flat-nosed cast bullet (like some of the gun-rag writers do) you try to break a major skeletal structure......and a shoulder is the best of all possible locations. breaking a shoulder should anchor the animal and allow you a second shot.

i've seen deer drop over right where they stood with a jacketed high-velocity bullet. but the hardcast flatnose doesn't seem to kill that way. they can kill quickly......or they can allow the animal to run a pretty good distance!

hit the deer in a manner so as to break the off-side shoulder, and then reload so that you can shoot again if needed.

I just got a .44mag. barrel, when I slugged it, it was .431, I called H&R, I was told their standard .44mag. is .431 with +- .002 tolerance.
I have no idea why they selected .431 as standard, but had I known that, I would never have ordered one.
The .308 Win. barrel I received was also a disappointment, .310 groove diameter, again ,I called and was told standard was .308, but +- .002, so .310 was in specs.
Not happy about this, at all.

No issues chambering the bigger diameter bullets in your chamber?
