.357 magnum handi for hunting

:grin: Ok, I'm getting a .357 mag barrel for my gun.  I'm curious about a few things:
1.  Who has one?
2.  What game do you hunt with it?  (varmints, deer, anything larger?)
3.  What loads do you use for deer size game?
4.  What do you consider the furthest distance you'd shoot deer size game?  (75 yards?  100 yards?)

Well Tommy, I don't have a 357. But I do plan on getting one. If nothing for the fun of being able to shoot both 38's and 357's in it. I just got a 44Mag and I have to say I don't feel like I need one, yet, as a fast growing Handiholic.. :o ....I will buy one :grin: .
I like the fact of being able to shoot a pistol caliber in a rifle and also be able to have increased FPS. It's all good here...

:D  So, there's someone else on here late at night besides me!  I have actually killed a deer with my Ruger Blackhawk in .357 mag with a 158 grain bullet.  It was a small doe at about 40 yards and she jumped in the air and fell down dead.  

I know going from a 6 1/2" barrel to a 22" barrel will seriously improve the ballistics.  Buffalo Bore and CorBon ammo have some pretty stout numbers to them  :shock:   I suppose if I ever got into handloading I could create the same kinda stuff for much cheaper.

I just would like to hear from this forum from those who have "lived" hunting with a .357 mag.

I have four .357 revolvers a Marlin .357 and two handies in .357 one reamed to the max. Yep they work, I like the heavy 180 grain cast bullets but 180 XTPs shoot very well as do the simi jacketed soft point like remingtons. Then I'll down load'em to 3.5 grains of titegroup and some 125 gr cast and murder some rouge soda cans. The Marlin is better when they charge  in large  groups. 8)

So, besides shootin' the crap out of some cans, what else do you hunt with the hard chargin' .3-5-7 mag?  Have you taken deer with them?  How big?  Anything bigger?  (elk, bear??)

I won't try them on anything bigger than white tails, But with light loads I've shot tree rats and wabbits while last year I shot a large doe, One shot (Handi rifle of course) took out both lungs and the liver she ran about thirty yards before crashing up against a tree. I don't hunt alot partly because I don't have the storage place for meat yet but my .357 have never let me down. 8)


 BTW I haven't been drawn for an ELK hunt yet but here in KY thats getting closer to becoming a reality. I only hunt for meat, I don't trophy hunt. That might change if I see one of those big Elk. :D

i have 2 handi's in 357. one is still new in the box and the other gets shot as much as possible. i put 50 168 grain keith bullet rounds through it out yesterday just to keep my eye in shape.

it's a really great cast bullet gun with the lyman keith style 168 grain 429357 bullets and run of the mill 148 grain wad cutters.

so far, the only thing i've shot is paper, but it's a fun gun to shoot. it was my first handi !

for the keiths, i use 90 % wheel weights and 10 % 50-50 solder or tin if i have some laying around ahead of a full load of H110 or 296. i use about 3 grains of solo 1000 for the 148 grain wadcutters, a real mild round that expands the wadcutter in the barrel just enough. my nephews and nieces shoot this round when up here at camp (home now)

If you don't reload, Winchester Supremes 180gr partition shoot great in the Handi.
 My Handi is one of the many .357mag's that was reamed out to shoot the 357maximum.
 As far as reloads:
 The .357mag =  180gr horn xtp over 15.4gr w-296 with a magnum SPP.
 The .357max = 180gr xtp over 19.5 gr w296 with a small rifle primer.
  (Firm roll crimp for both)
  Both accurate and good hunting loads.

if you hand load your 357 mag or max, make sure you NEVER reduce 296 loads ! shoot full boat magnum loads.
