williams fp sight for buff classic
« on: September 23, 2005, 08:42:19 PM »
this is a pic of the williams fp buff classic sight with angular locking bushing screw. no if i can talk williams into making two new elevation and locking screws with knurled nobs for finger locking, then i will not need a little screw driver to make elevation and windage adjustments. i hope they will as it will mean quick adjustments in the field.bernie :D

Bernie,
This is the exact setup I have been looking for. The Williams website has a Product # 572292, but doesn't have the knob on the side to secure the elevation tension. I also looked at the Williams sight on the H&R website, but don't know for sure if it comes with the target knobs. You may have covered all of this in another tread, but I have yet to find it.
Thanks,
Don

The FP sight on H&R's site doesn't come with the bottom left knob which replaces the set screw used to keep the elevation part of the sight in one spot. The other sight at H&R isn't  an FP, you can see all the Williams sights for the BC/Handi in the "Peep and Firesights" link in the FAQs and Helps sticky.

Tim

It's a shame we have to switch front sights to get the range. What's the best deal on the .404 height sight? I'm gonna have to do it to shoot long range.

Thanks

Lyman makes the 17A sight in 3 heights, .404", .494" and .584". I think the .494" is the correct sight for use with the WGRS as many don't have any problem with the WGRS, but H&R evidently ordered the wrong ones or for some reason, puts the .584" on a lot of rifles.

Thanks guys! You have saved me a lot of time and guessing. When you said "they" will sell you the side knob, were you referring to Williams or H&R or both? H&R sells the sight for slightly less than Midway or Williams. The front sight was installed crooked on my rifle, but I can replace it cheaper than sending it back to the factory. Other than that, I'm pleasantly impressed with the rifle. I have yet to shoot my BC, but have dispatched all of the deer, bear, and buffalo in my living room. I think I'm getting on my wife's nerves.

Williams has the set screw with a knob on it, Brownell's sells it for $8.99, part #962-000-079, the screw may need to be shortened to clear the barrel.

Mine have a .584, what the big deal with such a high front sight?

H&R installs the .584" 38-55 Target sight on the 45-70 barrel in error, at least they did on my BC as well as many, many others, both of my 38-55s have(had) the tall sight on them, but I've never used them, so I dunno if it's another error or not, I suspect that's the case anyway.  ::)

And is it preferable to change it for a .494 or a .404, what's the main problem with the .584?

If you like shooting 6" low at 50yds with the factory WGRS at the top of the it's adjustment range, nothing at all!!  ::) The .494" will work like it's supposed to with the WGRS, the .404" will give you the best long range shooting capability.

With the FP-TK bottomed out, 405gr rounds at 1600fps hit 1½ high at 100yds.

So the .494 is the way to go for short and medium distance?

That would be the best and would work for most everybody, it would've been nice if Gardner would have just done it right to begin with.

Tim, I see that the WGRS does not work out with the .584 high front sight and the gun impacts about 6" low at 50 yards set up that way. Does it work the same if the gun has an FP series rear sight similar to the one depicted on dodd3's gun as shown in the first post in this thread? I need the info for my Buff Classic...Thanks....<><....:)

The FP sights have lots of elevation travel, so it would work fine with the .584" sight, it would just need to be that much higher which may or may not be the best for the shooter's cheek weld and accuracy, it would also limit the long range capability.  ;)

What's the part number (stock number) of the FP sight?

Both FP sights are listed in the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs, the FP-TK used to be listed on the H&R store page, but it's still not online, you may be able to call H&R and order it, but I'd check their price, Gardner used to sell it for $60, but I seriously doubt Remington does, probably closer to $90. The only sight listed in the 20 page price list I have is the WGRS for $18.55.

Dunno where specifically, I've not used the .494", but I suspect POI would be closer to POA than with the .404".

MSP retired,
I'm using the FPTK with the stock .584 front sight. It is approximately at the half way point in elevation adjustment with 405gr LRNFP (POA/POI) at 50yds. The 300gr LRNFP shot approximately 5" higher at 50yds so I think I'll be OK out to 100yds without a problem. The range I go to has 100yds as max distance. If I have a chance to shoot further and run out of adjustment I'll go with the .494 front which seems like a good compromise. My 405 loads were very light, probably 1200fps so I assume it will shoot flatter as I go up in velocity. Hope this helps. - Don
