Need some opinons on two .17hmr rifles
« on: March 05, 2006, 01:21:25 PM »
im debating on what to get here. i want a .17hmr but i dont know if i want the marlin 917vr (syn. stock w/ bull barrel) or the h&r nef sportster w/bull barrel. if read alot about both and they seem to have great accuracy, which would be my best bet? And im planning on putting a sweet .17 scope on it, ive heard they are good too. any info would be appreciated!!!

The Marlin is going to shoot WAY more accurate the the NEF.  Marlins are much better built, have better barrels.  Break action guns tend to string their shot veritically with groups that are 1" wide but 2"-4" tall.  Really good break action guns won't do that because of close torrences.  T/C comes to mind but look at what they cost.  I've tried NEF and Rossi both, more that once.  The T/C I had shot good round groups.  Some T/C barrels shot great, some OK.  But all were way better than Rossi or NEF.  Besides in the wintertime game fields cold fingers can't reload a single as quickly as your gloved hand can run a bolt (and do you really want to pick-up the round that just fell into the snow?)  Did I mention that I like Marlins?  I have a couple.  I like 'em.
I aim to please - but often miss.

i had the marlin and it was a heck of a shooter. almost whenever i wanted i could shoot a group i could fit under a quarter.

i am not a great shot either, just that it could really lay 'em in there.

I've got a 917V and a 917VS, also have an NEF Sportster 17hmr and a 17M2, can't say in the least that the Sportsters are less accurate than the Marlins, NEF is owned by Marlin, both use Green Mountain barrel blanks. It's all a matter of how much money you want to spend and what kind of rifle you like, lots of shooters love the Sportsters. They sell for $110 to $130, the Marlin 917 doesn't cost too much more. The trigger on the 917 can be expensive to replace, it will be much heavier from the factory than the Sportster, new Sportsters are coming with 3-4lb triggers, my Marlins were 5-6lbs, replaced them with Rifle Basix triggers. As far as the Sweet 17, I've read both good and bad about em, wouldn't be my first choice.
