i have bin shooting the lee 500r plain base bullet for some time with very good results. but with my smokeles load it is at max velosity with out getting leading so i think i came up with the soluetion,fit a gascheck used a lee champher tool to champher the base of the bullet then very carefuly tap agascheck on with a small malet then run it through the lee sizer die. it worked nice tite fit will have to see how they they shoot but i think they will work and this will allow me to bump up my load. will post when i have tride them see the pic the one on the rite is the gascheck.

I have been spraying my cast bullets with lyman moly spray to reduce leading. I do this after I have sized and lubed them, dries hard. It may help leading

Good work, Bernie!! Just don't shoot em over your chrony, detached gas checks are hard on chronys!!! :eek:

i dont think my budy would appreciate that much its his chrony lol, i will probebly put a dab of supper glue on them and see if that holds.

went to the rainge today to try the gaschecke 500r bullets shot two 5shot groups very imppresd. tryed a hotter load first group 7/8 inch at 100meters second group just over 1 inch put 10 rounds through the chrony with the hoter load they where first five 1686-1684 -1689 -1683 -1691 second five 1692 -1685 -1687 -1683 -1688.all loads where each done on my reloading scales i never use a powder thrower i measure each charge on the powder scales, there was absolutely no leading.i added all the velosity's together and divided by ten and came up with 1686.8 average which is prity well zipping along for a 512 grn bullet it is a bit time consuming fitting the gascheck's but the results are worth the fideling about.

What veloctiy were you loading to before the gas checks? I am interested in to see. Im sure that whatever it was, it was fast enough for my needs.(plinking and whitetail deer) Besides, a Volkswagon Beetle sized projectile, going just 1000 FPS is gonna do some serious damage! :eek:

cpj my lower load was just ovr 1500fps and no gascheck just a .030 card .

What is this "card" you speak of? What load were you using?

cpi when you shoot plain base cast bullet's with gaschecke you need a card wad to protect the base of the bullet when the powder goes of outher wise you will get gas cutting at the base of the bullet and when it exit's the muzzle it will be very inaccurate . my load i was using was 39.5 grn of adi 2207 australian powder.it is quite a fast burning powder .

cpi i noticed a typo in my last post to you it should have said when you shoot plain base cast bullet's with out a gaschecke you need a card wad to protect the base of the bullet when the powder goes of.i punch my own out yoou just need a 7/16 wad punch which you can pic up at your loacal h/ware store.i punch them out of the 1/16 cardboard from the back of a big noat pad, when you punch them out do it on a block of end grain wood that way you wont blunt the punch you can by them from track of the wolfe.hope this is some help. bernie :grin:
