Rechamber 357 to Max, Herrett, or 35 Rem???
« on: July 15, 2006, 04:10:01 PM »
I have one 357 mag barrel and a chance to get a second one at a good price. What is the best rechamber in your opinion, 357 Max, 357 Herrett, maybe a 357x30-30 or a 35 Remington? I like to shoot lead bullets, plink, and a few days out of the year deer hunt. I have a 30-30 barrel and a 50 BP barrel already. Thanks.

I would say 357 Maxie, nearly ones I have heard of went the Maxie, I did and like it very
well. I think Quick went to 35 Rem  (IIRc). Herrett I think you 3would have to makeyour Brass.
Lot of work. 357X30-30 would need spec dies they would cost a pretty penny.
 Just my 2 cents.  Marv

Most do 357max, mine was a 357mag turned 357max when I bought it, I had it rechambered to 35 Rem, would love to get a chance to got shoot it!!! :'(  Another choice would be .358JDJ.

Another consideration ......

Or reason to stay with the .357 Maximum ......

If you own and shoot a .357 wheelgun, rechamber the Handi-Rifle to the Maximum so you can still shoot .357 Mag ammo in it!  Yes, it may rattle a little as the bullet makes the long jump to the lands when shooting a Magnum, but you'll still have a very versatile barrel.

Of course if you already have a first .357 Magnum bbl and you may or may not keep that in a "magnum" (and rechamber to a .357 Max), then go with the Herrit or .35 Remington (my choice in that scenario is the .35R since it isn't a wildcat and factory ammo is available).

But also consider that either .357 Mag barrel will have a 1-in-18 3/4 inch twist.  Heaviest bullet that may stabilize without keyholing might be aroiund a 180 and no heavier.  This is a concern I have (when I get my own NEF .357 Mag rechambered to Maxi).

I vote for the 357 Herret mainly because I have a contender in it. It will do 2350 fps with a 158 gr. XTP in  a 14" barrel and I would love to see what it could do in a 22" barrel. According to all I've read about the cartridge's mentioned, the Herret would be the most accurate.  Digger

How about the 357/44 bains and davis?
a long time ago i had one in a contender, efficient 35 rem power in a 14" barrel. don't know about a longer barrel of a rifle though.

Both of those have been considered, I just didn't list them...
a 358 jdj is just a 357/44 on steroids.
I like the idea of the rim so 356 win (358 rimmed) or 357 Herrett or even the B&D or max>>>>
So many good choices...I will need to get more 357 barrels....
