Chambering to 358 winchester
« on: February 03, 2008, 02:32:48 AM »
Has anyone reamed the 357 barrel to 358 winchester?  If so, what extractor did you use?  308?

Thanks for any info.

It's been discussed but I don't remember anyone doing it, any of the 30-06 based extractors/ejectors would work.

Have a friend that has a 35 rem reamer to cut the throat and a 308 reamer to cut the chamber.  Think I'm going to give it a try.  When and if I do, I'll post the results.  Gotta get that 357 barrel first! :)

Thanks Quick for the reply,

If you get around to the project, use a lathe to cut your chamber with. Maybe you already know this, so if you do, disregard and my apologies. It is the only way to keep it straight and true to the bore. Hand turning would put the breech end of the chamber out of round and probably over size. Do not even think about a hand drill, it is worse.

Now you've got my interest up Bobby. The 358 Win. is one of my favorite calibers. Would also be a good thing to do with that receiver I bought from you. Keep me posted, we may both do one. By the way, there is a certain District Judge in our area the is also a darn good machinist, and he has all the equipment. If you have access to the reamers.....................

Keep in touch.

The 1-18¾" twist shouldn't be a problem with RN bullets, the 250gr BTB will stabilze to 100yds in a 357Max, dunno about further, the added velocity should work out to 200yds in the 358W, but the only way we'll know for sure is if someone tries it.  ;D I was told, and read that the 1:16" twist in my RMEF 35 Whelen wouldn't stabilize 250gr spitzer bullets, but the <1" groups it shoots with the 250gr Speer spitzer tells me different. :D Mattparliament's 35 Whelen shoots bug hole groups with the 225gr TSX, not a short bullet, it's longer than the 250gr Speer.

I was going to get a 35 Rem, but I may just wait to see the results of this 358 rechamber.
