Eastern Montana near Wibaux
« on: April 13, 2009, 11:11:31 AM »
I drew my tags for Mule Deer and was wondering the best time to hunt. I hear all about the rut weeks but what about the first week They are all open to me on this 30,000 acre ranch. It will be just 2 of us hunting Mule deer only and it will be for a full week 7 days of hunting. It is breaks type country and we have never hunted out west for mule deer. I have read alot about it but need to know when is the best time to go if anyone can give any pointers or help me that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

Well the opening week they are dumb, but you might not find a nice Buck on the Ranch you are hunting.I like the Week before Thanksgiving. The Bucks should just be coming in Rut and moving around.
If this is your first Mulie hunt,be aware they all look big.Dont be in too much of a hurry to shoot.Have some good glass(A spotting scope & Bino`s 8 or 10 by 42`s)You get what you pay for in Optics.Buy the best you can afford.A Range finder is nice.Look for horns outside the ear.4X4 or better.Look for good mass. You will be spotting and  stalking so you will have plenty time to do this.If you are hunting Breaks areas do a lot of glassing on sides of hills. They will move more at daylight & Dusk.Be there then.Practice shooting long distance.Say to 300 yds.If you can get there in August or Sept. and see what the areas holds. That would tell you more of when to go than anything.  Good luck. ;D

If ya hunt the Breaks, better be on horse back or in great shape.  Without a horse, if ya get one on the ground, better have a frying pan and fork to lighten the load, cause it's a hard country to drag a deer out of.  DP

dpe.ahoy you hit that one on the head.... I used to patrol the breaks up Catcreek Rd to the CM Russel, and always hoped that my patrol vehicle would not break down as there was not radio reception or cell service available going up thru that country.  It is very hard country, and anyone going up there would be wise to have everything to pack something out.  Also make sure you let others know where you are going, if you got lost or disorientated in that country it could be many many days before you find your way out.
