The new .338 Marlin Express gives traditional lever action rifle fans a new rimmed cartridge, boasting ballistics not too far behind those of the .338 Federal rimless cartridge (200 grain bullet at a MV of 2660 fps). It handily outperforms the obsolescent .356 Winchester (200 grain bullet at 2460 fps), the rimless .358 Winchester (200 grain bullet at 2490 fps) and even the legendary .348 Winchester (200 grain bullet at 2520 fps).

Same here on the shoulder issue.

I would have a hard time NOT getting this one though.  I have thought a lot about building a .338 Federal on one of my Mauser actions - the entire project being a much more costly committment that a whole Handi.  It would be an easy decision to add a barrel.

I would buy one.

Question: Anyone interested in a 338 Marlin Express Handi?

Most of the polls have been for accessory barrels. Can I assume you/they are now adding this poll as a complete rifle in the .338 Marlin Express?

Should I put it on the Christmas list now?  ;D

I would buy one, but then I was going to buy a Marlin stainless when they hit the shelf, but no ammo yet.  The rifle has been there for 4 months and still no ammo in Billings MT.  Got tired of waiting, so bought a 358 BLR instead, ( couldn't find any damn ammo for it or cases, but did get some ordered in) so yes I would get a barrel or prefer a complete rifle, AFTER ammo was available.  DP

I vote yes too. A 338 would fill a nice whole in the Handi catalog, and my needs in the woods.
If they have the tooling and ready to go then why not?

What will it do that 338-06 or 338 Fed can not do?  After all the Handi does not have to worry about what will function in the action.
But any of the three would be a great choice for larger game.  OK the rim would be neat but the 30-06 and the 308 extract fine.

I think it can do about the same at a lower price if it is adopted.  Factory Handi= $270ish...... Custom Handi (wildcat)= add at least $100 to the original cost.

More than that, there's no .338" bored Hand barrel available, so that means a rebore or stub, either will cost about $300 PLUS the cost of the original barrel/rifle/donor parts or about $600.  :-\

I am trying to convince myself that since it has a rim, recoil will be less. :-[
"225 grains being pushed to 2000+fps is 225 grains being pushed at 2000 fps" says my sub-conscious, but I am ignoring it.  Denial is a powerful tool. ;D

Ken Waters wrote up the .338-08 wildcat in his pet Loads in '95, if anyone is interested in some test data.  On paper, it shakes out to be every bit the panacea that so many others already are, but there is some extra little bit of practical sensibility,.... and I think the rim is cool. ;D

I voted yesterday, but my post got lost.  Anyway, Yes I'd buy one.  Would rather have a .338 Win Mag, but would settle for a .338 Marlin Express.  Recoil should be light and very manageable.

I'm curious if a 338 Marlin Express could be re-chambered to a 338-06.
I can't find the dimensions for the 338 Marlin, but looking at a 308 Marlin Express compared to a 30-06, it might be doable.

Not gonna work, the 338MX case head is .507" compared to .470" for the other 338s.

Finally got to hold a 338 Marlin round in my hand tonight. first ones in Billings.  Very nice, wish I had seen them before spending $ on 358 Win.  It is a nice fat little case, looks quite effective.  I would change my vote from maybe to a "Oh he!! yah!" ;D  DP
