Max pressure+45/410 barrel?
« on: October 10, 2009, 09:05:22 PM »
Hello everyone,
What are the maximum safe pressures for the 45/410 barrel?  I have heard it has been made with softer steel than the rifle barrels. A friend is interested in loading full-brass loads with jacketed pistol bullets and needs a baseline to load from.

Thanks, Dinny

The barrel is 1137 mild steel, same as shotgun barrels, centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy. The bigger difference is the frame on the Survivor is an SB1 which H&R doesn't offer with a 45 Colt barrel. But given the jump to the rifling, I doubt +P loads in the Colt will cause any problems. Some members have used the 45/410 barrel on SB2 frames loading longer brass to reach the lands with a bit higher pressures with no problems, do a search here in the Centerfire forum on it.

Dinny, if you use the search function for 45/410 selecting just this forum from the list, you'll get the better part of 8 pages of hits, it's been discussed a LOT, if you know the username of someone that's made posts on it, just add their name to the by user field.  ;)
