Graybeard's New Ride
« on: December 12, 2010, 05:31:41 AM »
I'll start this off here then move it to the Trucks Forum after a few days. Just wanted to show off my new ride. It's a 2011 Toyota Tundra Double Cab standard bed with 5.7L 381 HP and TRD Off Road package.

I traded the Sequoia and got within $2000 of what I paid for it over two years ago and got zero interest financing that allowed me to keep basically the same payments as I was paying. I bought step bars to help me and Faye get in and out easier which I'll have put on next week. Here is a photo of it.

OHHHH my, not a Toyota!!!!!!! :o Just kidding!!!! I work at TMMWV, a plant where we manufacture 4cyl., 6cyl. engines and 6 speed transmissions. Last month we built our 1 millionth 4cyl. engine. I myself drive a Tacoma, would like a Tundra but just don't want to put the gas in it for my 80 mile round trip drive.

Production numbers at this time are around 1450 4cyl, 1000 6cyl. and 1800 6 speed trannys in a 2 shift day.

Nice ride Bill, and I like your choice of color ;D Living in the deep south, you need a heat reflecting paint. Here in the great NW, we can get by with the darker colors.

Yup it was made in Texas and no way would I buy another government motors vehicle. My last two ('82 Olds Delta 88 Royale and '83 Chevy Silverado) stayed at the dealership about as much as they did at my house. I swore never again to own a GM product and haven't.

This is my third new Toyota in a row following a long list of Fords. I still like Ford trucks and actually own a '99 F150 but in '97 when they changed the looks they sure made them ugly.

The photos doesn't really indicate just how tall this truck stands. At the bed it's as tall as Faye is and comes almost to mine and Matt's chin. It's a full 5' from the parking pad to the top of bed. It's a tall climb into it and yeah we're both gonna need those step bars. As short as Faye is it might still be a bit of a step up for her but it will be a lot easier to step up onto the step bar then into the truck than trying to climb all the way at once.

Next week I'll get the step bars installed and have Line-X spray in a bed liner.

David D. it has the six speed auto tranny you guys make there in WV.

The cab other than being a pickup is almost identical to the 2008 Sequoia I've been driving. All controls are the same and in the same place except the AC control doesn't have a digital read out like the Sequoia did. Same seats, console, over head console and all just like the Sequoia so I don't have to relearn the controls. Heck I only found out last month my Sequoia even had a roll down rear window. This one has the same switch which opens the sliding rear window. What the heck is up with that?  ::)

It has some sorta fancy radio package with blue tooth compatibility and controls for radio/stereo and cell phone on the steering wheel. Heck my cell phone does nuttin but make and take calls it ain't got a blue tooth in fact it ain't got teeth at all nor a key board either. It came with a 90 day free XM satellite radio package and I don't even listen to a radio when I drive. I'm sure Matt will if I let him drive it.

Doug

No, he got a nice truck assemble in America by Americans. Very few parts are made by American owed plants. Some parts are made in America by Toyota owed plants scattered across America because of this they call them American made parts, but the profits go to Japan. A lot of parts come by ship from Japan and trucked to the plants.

I work for Toyota and the trannys and engines we build are American assembled but not American made.

This post not intended to slam anyone on their choice. I work for Toyota and drive an American assembled Tacoma. I would like to know how American a Ford or Chevy truck is if anyone wants to inform.

Not sure about the trucks but the cars are MADE here. Engine plant, sheet metal stamping plant and assembly plant for the cars is here in Georgetown Ky just across the interstate from me. They give tours if you want to come see for yourself. A lot of my friends work there.  As far as the plastic and electronics most of any vehicle you purchase come from out of the US said to say. But if they didn't the car would cost twice as much. Toyota is on the NYSE so it is globally owned.

Made here, assemble here, ever how you want to put it, its done by Americans using mostly Japanese parts. Yes the Georgetown plant makes engines from parts from Japan or parts in America owed by Toyota, same as the Toyota engine plant I work at. Yes they do have a stamping plant there, also owed by Toyota. Aluminum casting come from the Bodine plants owed by Toyota. Shipping parts in are no problem. Our cranks and Georgetown cranks ship from Belgium to save a few bucks. We at one time used spark plugs made here in WV. but now they are shipped from Japan. A lot of parts like a wiring harness come from Mexico. The only thing American about a Toyota other than a very few parts is the LABOR!!!!!!

http://trybodinealuminum.com/

I,m not trying to be negative about this. I work for Toyota and drive one that's assembled in America from Japanese made parts, machines from Japan, using Japanese technology.

Toyota has plants in over 26 countries owned by Japanese!

No matter made here or assemble here the Tundra is a very NICE truck!!

Been looking at one of those myself. GM just don't do it for me anymore. I had a Toyota once before and was very happy with the service it gave me. You and the Mrs are gonna be styling in that ride ;D.

Thanks Richard. It's my second Tundra. My first was a 2004 I drove to the first GBO Prairie Dog Shoot out in OK. I traded it in on the Sequoia in 2008 but wish I'd just kept it and bought the Sequoia. If I had however I'd prolly not have bought the new Tundra. I've really had no problems with either of the four new Toyota trucks I've owned. The first was a Tacoma many long years ago.

I don't really know what constitues a "Made in America" truck or car anymore. Most of the parts for all of them that are put together here come from abroad somewhere and as stated they are all traded on the NYSE so ownership is also global to include some owners here in the US. Yeah I'm sure most of the profit goes to Japan but most all the labor is American workers so buying a Toyota puts about as many folks to work in the US as does buying a Ford, GM or Dodge. So long as it gives me good service I'm not gonna get all up tight on the Made in question or where the profit goes. I'd bet more money from me buying it stayed in America than left it.

Love my 2008 Tacoma. Built right here in California by American work.....

Oh, wait.... Those workers were mostly imported here from Mexico.

 Never mind.

Bill:  that is a nice looking truck.  Mine is a 09 Tacoma, 4 dr with a 6' bed - 25 yrs of Ford breakdowns leaving me stranded here or there finally did it for me and the Toyotas carry too good a reputation to ignore.  And since my Father-in-Law got one a while before I did his continual evaluation and praise really sold me on mine.

I need the 6' bed for farm work and I put a cab on the bed to reduce drag and improve gas economy; 21mpg at 72 on cruise is pretty dang good, and all the storage areas beneath and behind the rear seat are just right for lots of stuff.

You will need those steps installed, those Tundras sit pretty tall.

Very nice Bill!  Glad you got something you like, and for sure it's one of the best mechanically.  I'm not one of those who jumped on the bash Toyota bandwagon over the Corolla accelerators.  As a matter of fact, I just bought a Corolla.

I've seen some of these trucks remain serviceable and nice with well over 200k on them, so if you trade this one in time to come, it will probably be because you're tired of it!

Enjoy...
