?s about 35 Remington modified for Indiana regs
« on: January 16, 2011, 04:51:27 AM »
Indiana has proposed new rules that allow the use of centerfire rifles with the case length of 1.8 in.. I first thought about using a short necked 35 Rem. in a single shot platform with the bullet seated out to original OAL. Since then I wondered about using one of my favorite rifles the Remington 760. First question, will the neck be long enough to hold the bullets in the shells in the magazine from moving under recoil? Second , if seated to standard OAL will it feed? Thanks. I should add the length of the 35 Rem case is 1.91. The reason I chose the 35 is that it's the minimun diameter allowed, it's available in a repeating rifle, and as stated before I have a soft spot for the early model 760s.

I don't see why it wouldn't work.  Another option might be a .35 WSSM wildcat.  I know there are a lot of guys using this in the AR platform.

That's the dumbest law I have ever heard in my life.  Who is going to check the length of the brass in the field?

+1 for that answer. I have yet to experience it myself, but have heard the COs carry overall length gauges for measuring the brass.

Tom,

I have the same thoughts. I see no problem with your plan, I may try the same thing. As another option, I may have a .357 MAG Handi barrel rechambered professionally for the shorter .35 Rem length. If you already have a good load, try it with the shorter brass, you may not see any difference at all. As added insurance, I would put a factory crimp on it.

Thanks, Dinny

A tenth of an inch won't make a difference in performance. I use 375 win brass ,which is a tenth of an inch shorter than 38-55 brass, in my 38-55 loaded to standard overall length. I would use  a Lee factory crimp because you won't be in the crimp groove of the bullet if you use standard OAL.  Good Luck!

Why not just use a 35BR?

Dinny, I have considered that, the only thing is someone as absent minded as myself might accidently chamber a standard length shell (if it would chamber) and cause a blow up. Nobade, what is a 35BR ?

35BR is just a straight neckup on a 7BR. A little more energetic than a 35 Rem, and more shoulder to headspace on.

If you jump down and check the Indiana forum or on the DNR site, look for rules/regulation changes.

More energetic than SAAMI 35 Rem loads, but Super 35 Rem loads likely have the edge, I get 2450fps with the 180gr SSP in a 22" H&R. Case capacity of the 35 Rem is 50.8gr H2o, the 7BR is 40gr H2o.

Okay so I read the changes and it says.....

"Allows a rifle cartridge to have a maximum case length of 1.8 inches instead of 1.625 inches"

To me that means all the above cartridges still apply and will now include a few more.  Am I missing something here?

I thought maybe you had not seen the new proposal, That is why I posted it. ;)

You are correct in that all those  stated cartridges are allowable. But when if they change, everyone is looking for something a little stronger ;) My Maxi is plenty, but if they allow bigger that is an excuse to buy something else ;D

Thank God For Texas!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
That being said, looks like a 460 S&W in its factory form or necked down to 35 would be the hot set up for Indiana or a 444 shortened and necked down for a rimmed wildcat ( could be used in either of the max legal length version.

Going back to the original inquiry and noting that I don't live anywhere near Indiana (having nothing against Indiana other than its stupid hunting regs), when you bring up the question of the Remington 760, I would expect most field officers and the courts to interpret the law to mean that the firearm could not have a chamber that would accept cartridge cases with a length greater than 1.8".  If that is how things will be, then the factory rifle would have to have its barrel set back and rechambered to the new, shorter cased round, negating the use of factory ammo.  Keep in mind, that I have been wrong in the past, but only 80-90% of the time.

Attempting to use logic to deal with the result of any type of collaboration by bureaucrats and politicians is pure folly.  BH

According to the fellas that have checked with their conservation officers, the (proposed) law only dictates the cartridge not the rifle. Now if you have an illegal cartridge on your person while hunting, that could be an issue.

With all the supposed questionable hunting in our county, and Co's seen quite frequently. You rarely here of any arrest or checks may by them. Unless there is a marijuana bust. Then again, I do not know the officers so they may be popping the illegal hunter and it is just not reported.
