What's Up with Sevin Dust?
« on: August 27, 2011, 08:33:50 AM »
I use to buy a 5lb bag of sevin dust for around $5-6 a year ago.  Now, they want about the same thing for a dinky 1lb can.  We pay more and get less.  Sevin dust is a staple for gardeners in my area.  I wonder if they are trying to take it off the market as it is getting hard to find.  There is the liquid and granule stuff but no powder.  I use it around my dog kennels to control fleas and ticks.  It keeps them knocked down, but not out.  Every thing I've bought just seems to make them mad. Sevin dust is the only thing that was working because it didn't wash all away after it rained.  Any of you gardeners noticed what they've done with good old sevin dust lately?

Sevin has been about useless around here for a few years.  The critters seem to have developed an immunity to the stuff.  Now I use a product called cyonara.  It is a liquid concentrate you mix with water.  $12 worth of the stuff takes care of 8,ooo sq.ft. or more.  Can be reapplied every 30 days or so for such things as around your dogs.  Very potent stuff.  Keep animals away from the stuff while it is wet.

Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth on fleas.  It works great in any indoor environment or where there is shelter from rain.  As a bonus its non-toxic and isn't something that is likely to build a resistance to pesticides as it is mechanical, not chemical.  This works wonders inside against any bug.  You can just spread it on a carpet and broom it in.  I have to say that it's not going to provide any kind of instant relief but after a couple of days you'll notice a difference.
This that I do, I do by my own free will.

I have noticed the price of sevin went up. I figure it won't be long before the EPA decides its to dangerous to let people put it on their garden plants. So it will not surprise me if its taken off the market, just like many other products eliminated, that would kill pests.

It's just inflation. The price of everything seems to increase every time you have to purchase something. I ran out of MinWax polyuretane finish last week. Last quart I bought a year or so ago was $6. This quart was $10.50.  :P

It's due to DEP regulations. Many products have gone to from concentrate to premixed, mainly because of misuse by the consumer. Too many people think that more is better. Herbicides and pesticides have both suffered from strict regulations. I can't even find a good concentrate for broad leaf weeds when only two years ago, there were dozzens.

May be like the FDA, get an old effective drug banned and off the market so that a new patent covered drug that is much more expensive is all that is left to replace it. ear
