  One may winder why such a long barrel, unless it was to get as long a sight radius as possible..so as to get the most
   out of iron sights.

For using bayonets, you want to be able to do it as far back as you can, probably.
Carbines were offered by most military firearms builders back then also for those for whom such a long barrel was a handicap.
