I don't tree stand much anymore, but I am blessed with a wonderful, avid hunter grandson..who will take me along on almost any hunt..using his ATV to drop me at some very nice stands.

Truthfully, I don't feel quite as much excitment with the hunt as I once did !

I have a blind in the woods that is elevated by only about 3 feet, but that is enough for that location.  Did have a stuiffed stool in it, but yup..the
mice or squirrels got into that also..

Now we have an Amish built cabin in that woods..(14X20) and are preparing it for stays lasting days..  Have to watch though, so some of Kamala's
illegal pack rats don't try to take up residence..
I doubt they will bother trhere though...no stores 0or facilities anywhere near.

The country where I live is very rugged, and the type of hunting I once did isn't possible for me anymore. My hunting buddy and I still like to get out and hunt timber grouse (Ruffed and Blue), on old logging roads. This year we decided to get a deer tag and if we happen to get a shot in a location that is suited for our tired old bodies to retrieve one, we might do so. Most of the country here is straight up, or down. Way up or Way down lol. Most of our hunts are limited to open wooded areas. 50 yd. and closer shots. We don't use stands like they do back east. We do the spot and stalk type of hunting. Now it's a lot of spotting and not so much walking. We leave the huge clearcut areas for the young folk to glass and snipe Deer or Elk.

This year, I'll take a rifle I have never hunted with before. The left likes to say they are guns that are only made to kill people with and should be eradicated. A 7.62x39 in an AR platform. It's my modern 30/30. "Sort of." Deer don't know the difference.

My son called a foam insulation company yesterday... plans to put 2" of foam all around that cabin.  He just wired it a month ago, and has a
   generator in place.
Wood stove will soon be in place, along with other "comforts", so it should make a good retreat for members of the whole extended family.

Ageing definitely has a lot to do with the lost interest in deer hunting. I also don't have near the interest to deer hunt that I used to. But then its like that with many things in life. Last night my 12 year old grand daughter got her first deer with a cross bow. Got more enjoyment of seeing that then me ever shooting another deer.

Went up to see my grandson to get a haircut. (he learned barbering , but only does it for family), and he gave me about 6-8 pounds of ground
venison, plus some venison/cheddar cheese hotdogs..

I had about given up meat eating due to lack of interest..but then Doc said I was a bit anemic, so I'm back to beef..or in this case venison...and
   spinach.  :D  ;D

[Size=12]We still need to hunt. Winter, in a limited woodshed, has got to be one of the cruellest forms of nature. Starvation is ugly. Proper management is good for the herd.

Wildlife officials, with appropriate credentials, are the deciding factor in management of the herd. Many college students contribute annually to deer study and deer herd management.

Like Mike Row's dirty jobs, these eventual state employees, in many cases, discover vital information about the herd. CWD is a big data base, which we need to understand, but don't yet. The natural world can be a very ugly place for wildlife.

I was on stand opening morning, after a nifty fall when climbing aboard. The fourth rung was full of termites and gave way as my son entered the stand first and I followed. Not to be deterred, I told him when I got there to seize me by the collar, drag me past the fifth rung, then into the stand.

That did not work out to plan. He tried to grab me around my left arm instead. Boys don't listen to their fathers. He had promised to rebuild the ladder before opening day.

I slipped out of his hand, full weight, onto the number one rung, which gave way. I hit the ground backward on a roll Into the SOFT tall johnson grass, like a hay loft.

I did not get hurt. I did crunch my neck a little bit and it'll probably become arthritic over time. There have been 3 chairs that have given way beneath me following all of my surgeries that caused me to fall backwords onto my neck and shoulders, so it was not the first time.

Fortunately, there was a metal ladder with complete rungs. I was able to sit on stand 4 hours. My other hunting partner has since rebuilt the entire ladder.
