It occurs to me that clutter is ruining efficiency in our lives.

Hypothesis

There is insufficient flat space to keep us sane.

Everywhere you look, particularly in your reloading room, every bit of flat space is loaded with clutter.

If there was more flat space, we could untangle the clutter, put it into appropriate piles, PUT IT AWAY, and make more flat space, which would ease our troubled minds.

I am not saying that I am a messy reloader. The lack of uncluttered flat space though is loosening my bolts.

I have three work benches in my basement. One being a reloading bench. Then a work bench in my garage. I'll clean the clutter off them once in awhile, but then through time, they all get cluttered again. Its a never ending madness.

just went through the loading room to clean. took 2 days, next why welding room and when the snow goes and i can get the toys out ,the barn. that one will take days! loading room is usually cleaned in the fall and spring and by that time there is no bench space anywhere and i have 6 benches!! but i did load a crap pile of ammo this winter. just finished the last project. 600 rounds of 44 mag. most of the brass is now loaded except a coffee can of 380 and ive got a bunch loaded and almost hate wasting the primers on it. realistically i could have stopped loading last year. ive got enough ammo to last a young man WHO SHOOTS his lifetime. but its an obsession. told myself im not buying anymore brass so any future loading will be ocd related from looking at the piles of brass that i shoot. son in law will be here the day after i die hauling out ammo and tools (another obsession) just bought mig #4, try telling your wife you need a gas mig for .30 and .35 wire and a flux core for .30 and .35 and 2 stick welders 2 sets of torches and a plasma cutter when i weld or cut maybe once or twice a month. then 5 rolling tool chests the son in law says are his because he does 90 percent of my wrenching anymore. yup my name is Lloyd and ________!!!

I totally agree.  Flat spaces are a premium.  All of my reloading and all of my work benches are cluttered.  I have a two car garage completely filled and cluttered, as well a bedroom converted to man room for reloading as well as a drawing board for doing design work on the side.  Wife was in computer business for years and she has another bedroom converted to office/parts storage completely filled with parts.

Waiting for a lot of "round-to-its" to show up.

The loading bench/room is cluttered, the shop,Barnes and sheds are also...But I know exactly where everything is, till someone moves sumthin....throws off ⁶my whole system...now I can't find nuthin!!

I think an empty spot on top of a work bench is an invitation, and an opportunity to place something in that empty space.

  Another blacksmith I know, admits he does need a flat bench...but beyond that, no tools etc. will be found just laying around in his shop, simply
  because he has no other flat surfaces...even if he has to build a pirtched roof over them.

  He claims it is the most effective way to keep his shop neat and everything in it's place..  ..Wish I were that neat !

 I have been in places that were once - cluttered - after they were emptied for various reasons, including death, I always had the feeling this is not better.

I do not condone true hoarding, but I have found cluttered is far better than the opposite.

welding room yesterday. im now up to 6 angle grinders and i know there is at least 2 in the barn. had a theroy once that having one set up for grinding, one for cutting and ones set up with every type of wire wheel for 100 bucks a piece made more sense than taking 5 minutes to swap them out. then the 2 in the barn are a DeWalt and Milwaukee battery grinders because i just had to have 2 sets of about every 20v battery thing both company's made.

I have a number of battery tools, a battery grinder is something I would like to get. Just one more thing I can leave on top of a work bench.

ive got a dewalt and milwaukee and id rather the dewalt. seems to have more power. for most of my other battery tools i prefer milwaukee fuel. i do like the dewalt air compressor and small shop vac better than milwaukee. A real must have for me are the portable battery compressors. i keep one in all 4 vehicles. whats really cool about them is you attatch to the tire, dile your pressure and you can walk away because they stop automatically when thet hit your desired pressure. no more farting with pressure gauges or trying to match all 4 tires. shop vacs are handy too to vac out your car. theyre powerful and no more extension cords

Never thought of a battery shop vac, but that would be very convenient.

     For the car, I have a 12v, cigarette lighter plug-in air-compressor and impact wrench.
     All my saws are gasoline or electrical cord.

     Battery grinder , and drills. (They are not lithium and having to recharge is annoying, so I have electrical cord back-ups.)
 I spent hundreds of dollars to have the batteries repacked, so , I am NOT replacing them.     
      My Father always kept tools organized, but now I have a LOT of tools and tend to leave them , Near, where I last used them , so despite having a fair number of tools, they are now here, there and every where, except where I usually need them.

       TIME to ORGANIZE.

I’m glad to see that you are already thinking of projects for when you’re home. My favorite pastime is thinking about projects, not so much doing them…

In my mind I am "hunting", "shooting", "tractoring", "planting wildlife food plots", "reloading", "casting", "PC'ing", clearing the garage", and " restacking the reloading room" as fast as I can go. That my legs have no muscles, and in that I cannot walk, I sit in bed, do daily physical therapy, exercise, and await muscle regrowth with the strength again to be ambularory. Soon and very soon...

i carry a battery air compressor and a 1/2 battery impact in the wifes truck and depending on the season my 06 gmc or jeep, had to laugh she bought a ne bike alast year and they told her they couldnt top off the tires because their air compressor took a s---. she took out the dewalt, showed them how it worked and she said they ordered 2 before she left the bike shop. to me the big advantage when i switched to all lithium wasnt battery lif near as much as they weight half what the old dewalts i had weighted
