Title: Single shot love - any Baikal / SPR owners here too?
Post by: wvcruffler on December 09, 2010, 04:47:06 AM
Howdy all,
I am a relatively new Handi-rifle owner, but I also have a couple other single shot rifles as well.  My favorite is a Remington (Baikal) 18MH single in 7.62x39.  Took down a very nice doe Monday with said rifle using the Wolf 154g SP.  Nape of neck shot exited the far upper shoulder and had clipped the top of lungs with near instant results.  Good thing - there was 18" or so of snow on the ground.  The Baikal feels a little more well banaced to me than the Handi, but I have just started to use the Handi, so jury is still out.  I also have a JP Sauer top break single shot in 8x57JR.  It is a closet sleeper.  Painful to shoot, that one.

Anyway, love me a single shot rifle!  Hope everyone who hunts has a great season!

Check out the 'Single Shot Rifles' forum for other makes and models.

Here's a long thread on the Rem/Baikal:

I own both, handis and 1 Baikal/ Rem SPR 18 and like them both.  I like the weight and balance of the SPR 18 but not the trigger.  Mine is a 308 Win. and shoots the 130 gr. Barnes TSX bullet from handloads right nicely.  I took a couple of antelope at 300 + yards with it this past fall and its great rifle for that type hunting.
The handis are nice because there are so many different combinations of barrels, stocks, and accesories that allow you to have what you want.   They are also a great platform to rechamber, modify, and make wildcats on , really not much to complain about on handis either.     Jed
