Title: Ruger No. 1 45/70

My Ruger 45/70 No. 1 has a really short throat.  All bullets have to be seated to the very top of the cannelure to not hit the rifling, even 300 grain remington and hornady.  WHy to they make it so short especially when the 45/70 is ideal for longer heavier bullets.

Is this a brand new Ruger #1? I have a 1978 vintage Ruger #1 Lyman Centennial model, and it will easily chamber 500 grain bullets, with no problems.
 If this is a new gun, you might want to contact Ruger about it.

The nose of some of the heavier bullets are bore diameter. They will clear your throat. The 500 grain jacketed bullets are of this design as are many cast bullet designs. Nothing wrong with your throat. It will probably be more accurate with the lighter bullets than an extended throat.
