My new to me model 57 .41 mag has what I remember as being called worm hole porting.
Hammerdown says no it is not factory.
Now, not being a revolver guy, why do I remember this porting from years ago. Mine is a 57-2 built in 1989.
I am sure I remember this porting on guns back in the past.
Am I really crazy---well, the obvious answer is yes---but in this case, am I crazy?

William,
I'm almost as old as you and I've seen round hole porting before but never heard the term" round hole porting " could be your right but I can't remember that term.
However it does describe it well.

:) Howdy! William: Probably not what your's has, but there was a term called "magnaporting" of revolvers some years ago. Always, Gene

You might try calling S&W and ask them. It may have been an experimental run of guns that never took off. I had a Win Model 70 in .338 Win Mag that had a ported barrel. It turned out to be factory but never mass produced.

WL, worm hole? got any pics, are they small holes, where are they located. I have lots or Smiths including one that's hyper ported, six holes down the top of barrel rib from action to front sight, works great but haven't heard of worm holes.

Thanks for the pic. I'd say, no, that's definitely not factory but I bet it does cut down on the recoil.

That is what the guy at S&W said--with some reservations.
Here is what perks my curosity.
There is a chamber under the port.
Close examination shows work to be of other than someone with a drill-press.
Then there is this mind thing. While I admit to being a newby does not mean that I am completely ignorant of them thru the years. I swear I remember someone offering this porting on some guns years ago.
