I'm finishing up my first holster; getting ready to sew in the liner. I dyed it "British Tan" since that is the closest I can get to the shade of "Russet" I want.
I also have a belt I use as my BP gunbelt that is of a similar color. Very close in fact, just a little darker; more of a Burgundy. I am also going to line the belt and stamp it with the same border design I used on the holster.
At first I thought I'd just leave the belt "as is" color wise but I have decided I want a better match between it and the holster.
Since the belt has been finished, what is the best way to strip away the top finish and enough of the underlying die so I can redye it to a lighter shade of Russet?

Atlaw, nice work man, I think every body that has done leather for the first or second time dose this, I have played the matching game, man its hard to match differnt types of lether and get the finish the same, I told my self for now on if I want a holster its going to need a belt and sometimes a possables bag or knife sheth, if I get enouff lether to do every thing and its all the same lether I can dye it at the same time and I get matching lether goods, on the outher hand sometimes I want the belt to be darker than the holster but every thing ealse to match, in witch case I use differnt lether for the belt.
I did a johnny ringo rig with the spots and bullet loops it took for ever to make ever thing match ofcorse it doesn't but close,

I played around with deglasser, wood bleach and that other stuff but the best I can say is it lightened it just a little. The shades were very close so I hope a light coat of dye will tint the leather to an even closer match.
If not I will live with it. ;D

Thank you Atlaw, I used to do gunfights and that outfitt was a after thought that I tried, the rig was made out of some old tack that I had, the holster, knife scadard and posables bag are made out of an old saddle I bought at a yard sale the tree was broke and the belt was the sinch strap, noitice the old buckle also off the sinch really neat old buckle.
I bleave that is how 1860-1880's cowboy whould have came by a gun belt and such, I am still tring to find some of these old holsters lol Damn storage.

How do you strip leather? Off of who? Oops, I musta' been thinkin again.....
