Title: Looking for advice on a wyoming antelope unit to apply for me and my 12 yroldson
Post by: Kevin W on January 20, 2013, 05:20:21 PM

Hello All, I am new to the site and am looking to put in for the Wyoming Antelope Drawing for myself and 12 yr old son. This will be our first out west hunt. Our goal is to have a good time find a unit with good public access in the south east portion of Wyoming. Trophy quality is not high on the list, but we will have 5 days to hunt any week of the season. My thought is to go the second or third week of October; travel Saturday Sunday hunt Monday through Friday to help avoid the crowds. Idea's of units to apply and towns to consider for lodging would be appreciated. Any and all advice is appreciated and thank you in advance, Kevin.

There really is no good "public access" in southeastern Wy. There is some state lands, and some private lands enrolled in the Walkin Areas, but the pressure on those is very heavy.
I would suggest you look to the areas between Douglas and Gillette. There is a fair amount of public lands , including the Thunder Basin Grasslands, and drawing a permit is usually fairly easy as there are permits left over after the draw that can be purchased "over the counter".

Have fun. Antelope hunting is a great favorite of mine, it's a grand challenge to get out there on foot and go after them on their terms.

I hunted antelope in the Laramie area, back in '93, but I used an Outfitter, private land. I missed several nice bucks on my first morning (I  could not judge the wind out on those short grass prairies!) but I finally got a great buck ( 15", heavy horn, deep forks) that afternoon when he made a mistake, chased a doe right by me! I loved seeing them all over though, beautiful animals. I've shot several antelop does on the Deseret Ranch in Utah (right above Evanston.) Good luck on eating that nasty thing though! I have never found a way to cook them, so read up on recipes, etc. ha Lots of people like them, but tastes differ of course.
