Is what the ad said. It is on Armslist. Says $20 and names what they have in stock. I asked about the 700 large pistol primers and 1 pound of Unique. I am new, very new, so I am leary to be taken. I asked what they needed for it and he said $115. I proceeded to tell them I thot that was a wee bit high and he told me how much it was going for on the net. I offered him $80 cash and he said, $100, take it or leave it. Should I have taken it or would I have taken it? If ya know what I mean. I know there will be somebody who will be willing to give them that much I guess.
-
YOU HAVE POWDER AND PRIMERS LIFE IS GOOD
and you walked away with a good lesson about stocking up the times are better
-
Should I have taken it or would I have taken it? If ya know what I mean.
Absolutely Not!
I would have told him that I will remember his name, and that he could take those items and kindly yet firmly stuff them up where the sun don't shine right next to his head!
Around here like everyplace else components are tuff to find, but neither of the two shops in town are gouging.
Price is moderatly higher, but so is raw copper and brass, the shops I mention are not out of line
-
I started to get a little rude but I thot it unbecoming. They pretty much flat out stated that they were gouging.
I wish I would have started this hobby back when I first thot about it. I have no powder and no primers. I am screwed brother.
-
Gouging is an understatement. All of that could be had for about $45 depending on the store a couple months ago
-
only you can decide what it's worth to
you to buy anything. television- ammo-
components- state of the art cellphone. . . .
i won't enable any of these j.o.'s that
are gouging honest folks. one of many
reasons i am a computer hater. if
somebody online says their estwing
hammer is worth 250.00, and they
get that price, well ok for them. i'll
not be a part of the dishonesty.
there are some components out there
somewhere for you at a not-so-ripoff
price. if you are in a position to bide
your time, they'll come your way.
this current mess won't last forever.
i still remember the great deals my
friends and myself got after "Y2K"
folks made panic buys at inflated prices
and took a you-know-what at sale time.
be patient. you're not screwed.
-
Well Ranger, you are right. I have a great friend who said, come over any time, use my primers and my powder. We'll get more when the time is right. Not everybody is like that folks.
-
if you haven't already, check local
ads and posts for one-to-one trades
for components. i see quite a few where
folks need this kind of powder or this
brand of brass.
"wtt 56 pieces of rem 44 mag brass
o.t.o. for any brand 45 auto"
ads like that. . . .

If you don't have to have it don't mess with em. I don't like to do business with Wally world. And don't for the most part. But I won't cut my nose off to spite my face. If there is something I need and they have it I go get it. Same with this ammo if you can do without it, that's a good thing maybe they will get the price maybe they won't but not from you and that sends a message. Be nice if all could boycott the gougers right now. But supply and demand sometimes brings out the greed in folk.
-
From what I have heard this shortage will last about 14 to 18 months--the government is stocking up for another war. They figured out how much ammo they used during the Iraq war and Afganistan was going on at the same time and figured out how much they would need for a 25 year war. May be true--or maybe not.
Makes you wonder though with the SH-- going on with Iran and North Korea. May take a lot of ammo to kick their butts.

Would appear ous' was given a test and chose to pass by making the right decision. Too many people are choosing to be a part of the problem rather than help with the cure. Get by as best you can for now and hope we see another break so that you can prepare for the next bout. As long as folks are stupid enough to pay exorbitant prices, exorbitant prices will be all we see. Locally I remembered who tried to get rich quick during the last fiasco and so did many others because a lot of them are no longer in business.
Cybin, our government isn't charging up to oppose some foreign nation. They're charging up for a fight here at home. Iran and Korea are merely stepping stones.

HOW CAN A PERSON OVERCHARGING LOWER
THAN SOME ONE THAT WILL/CAN NOT SELL TO YOU AT ANY PRICE

This IS a good lesson in many ways. I am not a "Prepper", I don't have 25 years of food stored in a radiation proof bunkers, but -and it is a BIG BUT.... we live in a "just in time " society. There IS no "inventory" anywhere-anymore. Everything is predicated on the premise that everything is fine and will continue to be so. People cannot be bothered. My son is quite well off- yet his house and garage are practically spartan- he and his spouse cannot- will not- tolerate clutter. They believe that they will always be able to buy whatever they need, when they need it.
My place is junky, I admit it. BUT, if I could not get out to town for a month, I would be inconvenienced. Not hungry, nor bored, not lose much weight, not panicky, not seriously deprived, just inconvenienced. After 72 hours many people around here would be panicking.
If you shop around, you will be able to find some powders, and some primers. You need to develop a strategy. For example, if you insist on a 300 Ultramag that takes 80 grains of powder to the load, expect to run out. Get a Hornet also- so you can shoot 10 grain loads when powder gets scarce. Try to settle on a few powders, and cartridges that can use them, then buy bulk. Get together with some friends or acquaintances and buy powder in 4-5-8 pound lots, and primers by the case 5K or 10K. Bullets 1k to 2K at a time. None of these things go bad, if stored properly I guarantee at least 25 year shelf life on everything.
And while you are at it- quit buying "individual size" anything. If you don't have room for more than one----you probably don't need it. You might get tired of cheap mac & cheese- but you won't be malnourished.
-
I am not sure my reading comprehension is good either. Are you blaming me for his matching all the powders selling on-line? That is price gouging, right. Why would I do that? I run a computer shop and buy things all the time that at one time or another go up and down in retail pricing. I have to keep my costs at my original mark up. Then when I get to the parts that I paid double for, then I raise the price. These guys are trying to take advantage of people. Not good business.
-
Supply and demand.....he has it and you want it. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it....the more he can get the more power to him. I looked at his prices.....I kept going also.
-
I am WILLING to overpay for something I want. I offered him $80 for what I asked for and he said $100, take it or leave it. I thought I was fair. He knew he could get more. It really hacked me off when he threw in the"it's going for $70 sum on the internet.".
-
if he can sell for $100
why should he sell for $80?
has any one offered it to you for less than $100?
i hope you do find a better deal...he is high for sure
-
Glad The three shops I frequent the most havent raised the price 1 dollar on anything. No small rifle or pistol primers to be found but I grabbed plenty of large rifle and plenty of reloader 7. I have 3 guns that shoot that powder well so I have been buying it when I see it. Also bought some other powders Ive never used and truthfully may never use. Check craigslist, my buddy just scored 1000 small pistol primers for a decent deal.
-
I ahve some friends I didn't know I had. They are fixing me up. I guess not everybody has the same standards or lack of!
-
i am glad you found a better price
and he still has those primers if some one needs them bad enough
-
Well, thanks to a friend on Facebook, I found some local powder. I bought 2 cans, Blue-dot, and imr-4895. $20 and $27, respectively. I thanked him for his business and walked out, The only primers he had was large rifle. The search is on for large pistol now.
-
Seven hundred primers and one pound of Unique for $100.00? Perhaps someone in mid-panic will give him that much, but certainly not me nor anyone I know. I fully understand supply and demand, but some take the "supply" aspect to the extreme and hope for demand. If this feller has a shop, mebbe he's trying to make his money now to tide him over when supplies return to "normal" and nobody is buying...
-
Hey if the prices for primers and powder are too high right now--well heck--take up fishing---its about time to start anyway. In time the prices will come down.

-
If you don't have it and you NEED it; if he has it and you can "stomach" the gouging; then buy it. When prices go down and you buy more for a reduced price, the AVERAGE price paid for both should be all that you consider. After another (say) 30-40 purchases, the gouger's price, when AVERAGED over all of your purchases means nothing, except you NEEDED IT and HE HAD IT. Don't sweat it - you didn't buy it and you are currently NETWORKING, which is better, and that is working well for you.

Hee-hee. Actually I've been tying yarn balls for steelhead instead of loading some 45 ACPs. Just pacing myself as I only reloaded 100, 45 ACPs this month, but tied about 50 balls/flys...
-
Well, Facebook came in "handi" today. I found a dude who had 1000 ct of Federal large pistol primers. Bought them for $35. He also had 62 .308 brass. I gave him $45 and he delivered them to me at work. Times must be a changing.
-
powder here is about 26 bucks a pound in stores with out any and getting close to $40 in stores that have some. primers are $40 a thousand. So it would seem you could spend 20 bucks in gas looking for supplies or buy the ones you found.
If you can wait do so if you can't get what you can. One local store here had a tractor trailor load of powder ( they really do they use it as remote storage away from the main store)before the crisis now its gone . They still have fixed cost and less inventory to sell to pay for it. So they have to make more on what they have to survive. Its not always gourging but just covering bills with less.
-
I have seen primers as high as $75 for a thousand, and power as high as $30 a pound.... so I would say he might be able to get that $100 from the right person.
Definitely look around. I have seen a few shops that still have some powders left at normal prices.... not much though. It really depends on what your needs are.
They aren't going to ban powders and primers.... yet..... so if you can wait a bit, it should calm back down.
-
If I had the need ( and that is the real point ) I would get it if I were the OP.
-
I recently paid $50 per thousand primers and $30 per lb of powder. So your $80 offer was decent, even though he only had 700 primers. Most good shop owners aren't gouging, but prices are up.
-
Well, I felt all he was doing was gouging. Maybe he wasn't. Justa gut feeling on my part. Did not buy and found a real deal. Lucky me. You guys send me a check and I'll go pick it up for ya. :P
-
Lets face it, unless you are #1- a professional that uses firearms to make your living in some way- competitive shooter, security guard etc, , or #2- an idiot that shot his last round at a pop bottle in the back yard and is totally out of ammo, you don't actually "need" ammo or components. You should be able to substitute and take conservation measures and get through OK. If you have waited this long to panic you are way too late anyway, better buy some archery equipment.

no thanks most of us had put some away for a rainy day before this crisis hit . ;)

I really don't see how this is this hard? I don't "need" anything. I wanted them. Decided to not buy from one and bought from another. Just like my HSA account, I chose to look elsewhere. Contribute something constructive or positive to people that are new to the game. I (we) don't need your criticism. I realize I am a little late to find items for the low prices of yesterday. Thanks again to the positive people on here.

SORRY IF A CAME OFF WRONG
I JUST NEVER UNDERSTAND THE HOSTILITY
TOWARDS SOME ONE FOR ASKING TOO MUCH MONEY
AND NO HOSTILITY TOWARDS THOSE THAT OFFER THEM NOTHING AT ANY PRICE
It takes all kinds to make the world work
the gougers will still have stuff to sell when no one else does
or the gouges may also still have unsold inventory when things come back
-
One has to really question the "internet market" . Yes some primers are going for $75-$100 but the number of sales being made at that price are pretty limited so I'm not sure it's a true reflection of market price. I'm hearing more and more stories of private sale in the 40-$45 range. Enough stories to indicate that is the true market price right now..... 2 guys buying at $100 while 98 are buying at $45 does not make $100 the market price.

you mean like you guys send me a check and i'll go pick them up for ya ? ::) don't set yourself up if you don't like feed back.
-
Exactly. Really all I thought I would get was 1."That's too high" 2."That's about what some people are asking". I see that some, like any message board, feel the need to be a smart one to the newbies. I have 2 in mind. The rest are very good to interact with.
-
if i am one of the 2 sorry...
i will get to know you better before i get rude again....lol
i just sold a box of 22s to a friend of a friend....$25...
.and felt i was gouging a liitle but really wished i had just kept them....but he would be with out
now he wants another box.....
do i say no not at any price? ....or do i say $35......and $50 for the next
or say no [not at any price] and let him do with out...........so he won't bad mouth me
i told him i would let him know tomorrow
-
Ha! ;D Yes, that would be great! I say go with $25 again. Just so we all know. There are some of my guns that I would have to sell at a gouge price if I were to sell them. But our guns are sentimental, in a way, right. Difference to me is the bad business aspect of it all. I guess we all have our differences.

A guy is looking for some steak and he walks into a butcher shop.
As he pays for his steaks, he tells the butcher "Man your prices are high! The guy across the street only charges half of what you charge!!"
The butcher asks, "Why didn't you buy steaks across the street?"
"Well, he's out of them right now", the man replies.
The butcher smiles and says, "When I don't have any to sell, I'm at half price too."
