Title: Where is everyone from?
Post by: HuntingGuy on August 23, 2006, 01:02:16 PM
I'll start it off.  My residence is in Saint Paul, MN.   I have just over 400 acres in Roseau County, MN (Up near the MN/Canada border) where I hunt for both whitetail and black bear.

Where are you from, and where do you hunt?

Hello

I am from NW Wisconsin. I primarily deer hunt and do some fishing. I hunt Sawyer, Ashland, Washburn and Barron countys. Some day I would like to deer hunt in Minnesota. This would extend my rifle season since the MN season starts before WI. Hope to learn more on this forum.

USMC-  You got baits set out?? How are the bear hitting?  Our baits are doing pretty well, we caught a bruiser on the Cuddeback last weekend at one of the bait sites.

The wife and I live near Duluth but both of us grew up in the Henning, Leaf Lakes area, where we still hunt grouse and whitetails. I'm getting ready to go to Colorado elk hunting in Oct, while I'm there the wife will be hunting Pheasants in Neb. after Mn Deer season we will spend the rest of the fall weekends in Southeastern N.D. hunting Pheasents.  We both shoot sporting clays at Old Vermillion Trail, north of Duluth, winter or summer.
captkev  where in Todd are you ? I hear that there is a nice Sporting Clays course just west of Wadena some place. Do you know where it is?

You must go right by County rd 21 on hwy 210 to get to Henning right? Let me know ahead of time, and I might be able to shoot a round with ya. What type of Dogs do you hunt with if any? Also I've spent some time to the south east of Henning hunting neer Almora and Parkers Prairie. Great water foul just south of Urbank at a friends house. I also fish West Battle quite a bit.  You ever hear of a guy by the name of Glen Wilson in Henning? Stop in the cafe and ask the waitres if he's there, then mention Little Moran and my self (Kevin) if you meet him, He would know of any Sporting clays in the area.

captkev, your right, I go 210 to Henning so it wouldn't be to far out of the way to swing in. We don't have a dog, would like to, I have a neighbor down the road that moved to the country so his dogs have a place to run, they are all mutts and only are at home at night. Complaints to the town board help, he will tie them up for a while, as time goes on he gets lax and you have to write another letter to the board. It would take a lot of work to teach a dog to not join the pack. A friend of ours has a Brittany, he goes to the Dakotas with us pheasent hunting. As for water foul ( spelling correct) I watch that, thru the patio door, from the warm comfort of the dinning room table with a cup of coffee and the morning paper. When they are done hunting for the morning the hunters join me and we finish the pot. Back in the mid 60's I kept a dark house on the east end of West Battle by Hulls Landing, there was a nice spot right where the creek from East Battle dumped into West. Do you fish Muskies I used to see a lot of them in the dark house. I haven't lived there since the late 60's things have really changed, and I don't know a lot of people any more.

curteric... I think the creek changed directions...LOL it was going into East Battle  from West the last time I was there. The water was low and there was a wind out of the north, but that it is how it looked. A friend of mine had a cabin (His Ma & Pa Did rather) about 5 cabins down from the Mini Ha Ha resort... Its gone now (the resort)and theres a big public landing in it's place. I was there 2 weekends ago and the light green cabin was still there on Clarissa Haven Rd.- Dr. - Ave...? that leads to Sunset beach resort.   I like to say I fish for Muskie... But I'm not good at it, I'd rather be hunting Walleye ;)  Let me know if you'd like to Hunt some Grouse & Woodcock over towards Henning, I've got a German Short Hair that just loves to hunt...

I am from Northwestern Illinois.  I  deer hunt in the Namadji State Forest in Minnesota. Numerous places in NW  Wisconsin both public (Cheqamegon NF) and private land - Clam Lake, Hayward, Moose lake, Raddison. Southern Illinois (Shawnee NF) and in my home county of Whiteside. Quite a few southern and midwestern states as well.  Proud member of Minnesota Deer Hunters Association - I think it is a privilege to hunt in Minnesota as we do not have public land opportunities anywhere near where I live, and I love the northwoods hunting tradtions.  MDHA is the finest organization I have ever seen to preserve and foster this sport.  (sorry for the preaching - I just feel strongly about ethics, safety, traditions, and bringing young people into our sport)  Glad to see this forum.

Welcome Jim and CM.

Captkev, I have a buddy who is a taxidermist down in Victor IA with some GSH puppies for sale.  Are they a pretty good dog?  I've been considering a GSH or a black lab.. I just don't like the idea of the fact that the lab could just as well flush the birds up a lot sooner and a lot further away than one would wish.

I have one inactive bait station, and a new one that I started today. I find the bait scrounging to be kinda fun. I am a cheap Finlander, free bait is for me! The one I started tonight should be a good one. It is pretty nice when the landowner helps haul stuff with the tractor. They have brush-hogged trails all over, and now carry guns while on nature walks due to smelling bears while out. They are active hunters/shooters/NRA instructors. This is fun. The only downside is my 12 yr old daughter and I got into the hornets in the woods tonight, yeowch!

...Me too.  I get all my grease from the local mom & pop cafe, spent doughnuts from the gas stations, truckloads of old breads from the shops, and expired hard candy & molasses.  Most is free, the bread is $15/truck load or something like that.

Gotta love a brushhog, dont ya?  We just opened up some areas around stands for deer hunting, I'm really looking forward to Nov.  Good luck to you USMC next weekend.. Let me know how you do, I'll do the same  ;) Be Safe.
Title: Re: Where is everyone from?

HuntingGuy , I'd say it all depends on how you like to hunt, some like flushers, I've hunted behind a few that I liked that were well trained (Springers). I myself don't like to hunt too fast, I'd rather walk up to a dog on point and be ready for the bird to flush than to see a flusher get going on a running bird and then have to chace after them to stay in range for the shot. But thats just me, some like flushers, and thats fine. I think my percentages are a little higher in the thick Grouse woods as well. If you like to hunt late season ducks, then I'd say go for the lab, they can handle the cold a little better.

Bearfat is from southeast metro area where the Mississippi and St Croix river join. Too close to the big city and too far from my cabin, although after a week up there I'm ready to come back.

I work for the railroad as a switchman/conductor.

PS Where do you have your land at I thaught I seen you posted about up by the MN/Manatoba border. If so I have trapped a lot up north of Roesau for Bobcats and fisher and Pine Marten. Take care. ;D

Hi HuntingGuy.  I actually grew up right next door to you, in St. Paul Park.  I've also bought my fair share of iron from Gander Mtn in Woodbury.  I do most of my shooting up at the cabin, I try to get there at least twice a month, more when possible.  Lately though, I've been going over to Spooner, WI, where my parents moved to, and go to the club Dad belongs to.  In the past I've shot at the Oakdale Gun Club, Burnsville Pistol Range, the Hideaway (long gone) and Bill's.

Jon, I'm a member over at OGC and do most of my shooting there.  -- If I want a break from the city, I'll usually drive to Menomonie WI at their public range.  They have a 300 yarder there which is nice  ;D

jred I have hunted alot in northern Goodhue County west of Welch. Have yet to get my turkey although I've taken a few shots!!!

Do some black powder down there in December for deer. Attached photo was last year down there for 2 days...saw nothing!!!! It was cloudy and wet, perfect for stalking.

We also went south of Redwing for a day, some new spot a buddy showed me. Don't remember the name of it. Got within 200 yards of a guy that took a deer. I probably sent it up to him.

Howdy Fellas,

I'm new to the fire here. I grew up north of Isle (Opstead), but now live outside of Plainview in Wabasha county.

Try to get out huntin here and still make it up to the Folk's place once in awhile, too. I've bear hunted the last three years with a friend about 20 miles north of Duluth.

I love the smell of burnt charcoal and sulphur!!

Riley/MN your bear hunt location would put you close to Two Harbors. I go up to Silver Bay another 20 miles up on the northshore bear hunting.

I've been down by Plainview hunting grouse I think 20 years ago. I've snooped around Snake Creek by Kellogg?

I usually use the city of Wabasha as my turn around on the motorcycle run. The fishing looks like it might be good in the area, all the inlets and bays off of the Mississippi river.

Lot's of info on this site. Keep posting and checking back with your MN buddies.

Howdy,
Never got down this far on the site until today.  From Zim area and I hunt deer outback of my home on County and State forfeited land.  Hunt grouse all over the area from my home.  I want to get into hunting for fox and coyotes for some winter fun.  It is good to have a site with fellow Minnesotain's

I had a successful deer season with four does taken by myself and my daughter.  Never had a chance for a good shot for a buck, than I hunt meat not antlers.  Will take a buck if he wants to commit suicide though. ;D

Mnswede I got a hunting cabin on the North Shore next to the Silver Bay airport.

I take a weeks vacation in winter for coyote/fox hunting using bait (road kill deer). I'm hoping to head up News Years on a meat run. I tried hand calling and electronic calling but they always have the advantage. The bait hunting technique seems to even the odds little better on them for me.

Plus I'm lazy and sitting in a nice warm sniper bunker with a wood stove is more to my liking. If you check my profile I do have a web site and have some info/pics about bait hunting (more to come). The site is strictly about the rat shack and the goings on up there.
Also the little world icon under my avitar takes you right to it.

Welcome to the MN site. Check in with your hunting/fishing results. Got any bobcat where you are? If so how do you hunt them?
We've got Canadian Lynx up at my shack moving in area now but as you know they have even more protection than the wolf!!

Last years vacation only took one red fox on the 1st night up but so it goes

This rifle season my party saw fewer deer than in previous years. The south wind changed the patterns and the people hunting south of us saw many more than usual. I took a nice doe. It was the first deer I have taken with my sporterized Turk Mauser in 8x57, as well as my first deer with my own handloaded ammo. My 12 year old daughter got her first deer, a button buck at 40 yards with a Savage .30-30 bolt action rifle(with hand loaded 150grn Remington pointed soft point bullets). My Dad got a nice buck and a doe. I got an electric varmint call from Santa. I hope to try my hand with the coyotes this weekend. I hope to get a couple of hides to try tanning. I don't have a small bore yet, so I hope not to explode them with the .30/06. I live in the Mora area.

BF

You hunt the right way, exspecially for my old bones.  I have seen Bobcat and tracks around here, but I haven't tried hunting them.  I had been trying to healup from surgury of right shoulder since 2003, and now I feel better and I'm looking for a winter hobby.  Since I'm double retired now, time I have.

We have alot of road kill around the area, so sounds as though I will have to make the trip around the area to collect the deer.  I will have to comeup with some ideas for a nice sniper hide like you have BF.  On a nice -10 to -20 night, your hide is just the cats whiskers huh!

After deer season this area empties out except for snowmobilers on the weekends.  I have alot of area to roam in the swamps around this neck of the woods.  With most everyone working the weekdays, the woods are peaceful and quiet.  It is the reason I moved up to this neck of the woods.  Going up north of Nashwauk on 65 it is even more quiet and peaceful, except on weekends with the snowmobilers.  But then, this whole area of northern Mn is lacking in people and rich in wildlife/fish. :D

Hello all. I live and hunt fox and coyote in West Central MN, near Morris. We hunt deer and grouse a few miles south of Crane Lake, along the Echo Trail. I gave up waterfowling with the steel shot law, but replaced it with a few trips to Mobridge SD each year, to shoot prairie dogs. Lots of fun, and I don't need chest waders !

billy 56081 you'll need a digital host for your digital pic's. I'm just getting into digital so some of my pic's are crude because I have to scan my old 35mm onto the computer, take a digital pic of them on my viewer, and sent them to Photobucket.com which is free for 2gb of space (thousands? of pics) and for $25.00 a year you get 5gb of pic space. Try them free for a few months see if you like them. There are other free hosts out there but I couldn't download my digital pic's to them for some reason. http://photobucket.com/

See if you can find this post (I'll try to link you to it) in GO for posting pic probs: Follow instructions in the "[Q/A] - [ANSWERED] Posting Pictures" post started by "I am Cal". http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/topic,1804.0.html

USMC0332 I have used 30-06 full metal jacket and it was not too bad on the hides. Good luck on the varmint caller. Just remember they still like to come in down wind to check out that free meal they hear squealing.

Mnswede lot of guys use old junker fish houses for bunkers up by me. They set them up by a clearing, pasture, whatever, up wind (predominate winter wind) and bait all year. A DNR game warden told me to simply staple my road kill permits to the structure in case one of them runs across the bait they like to know who is hunting over the bait.

The old junker fish house is no different than a permanant tree stand. I suppose the state will enact a law if it gets out of hand with thousands of old fish house sitting in the woods? My bunker has been sitting there for about 15 yrs now on County or State land, I'm not sure which. It might be OK for bear hunting too but the wind is different there in the fall and I've never tried it.

Hey HuntingGuy I was using a $100.00 gift card in the Woodbury Gander Mnt 12/26/06 and at the checkout line with a new "Otter" mini sled and cover for my magnum sled when I thought I saw you. I checked out pic's you've posted and it was you. I would have said hello but place was packed, you was busy, and I figured you might have thought I'm some kind of internet stalker or something if I yelled out, "Hey...I'm bearfat are you HuntingGuy?"

Sorry dude...I'll introduce myself next time.

I believe there is a Hunting Preserve a bit Northwest of Wadena up Hwy 75. Oak Point Shooting Preserve (or Game Farm).

Hunt pheasants, quail, grouse, woodcock, coyotes, bobcats, deer, wild pig, wild turkey and would someday like to try bear and elk hunting.  Have a 5 year old Brittany who is doing one fantastic job for me.  Love watching her work!  Just took a nice 140-160# boar last week and now getting ready for spring turkey.

Bluegunner  Welcome I was wondering also where you went to get a pig?

Cowpox  Maybe we can get together for some hunting coyotes, grouse or....? I'm not to far north of you. I'm kind of a rookie at coyotes, but have a few decent spots to try if you'd like to. One of my neighbors moved here from Morris, he's a UPS driver.

USMC0332  We also saw fewer deer in our area last fall. Actually saw ALMOST NO deer all season. If my son hadn't gotten one up north the first weekend, it would have been a total loss as far as venison goes. The hunt is always worth it just for the experience, but....

Bearfat  What do you guys think of trying to have a get together sometime. It could be for breakfast or camping or fishing or.... Probably tough to do but I thought I'd put forth the idea. I should probably ask HuntingGuy as he's the official leader here.

I tried to bold only the names, but it looks like I need a little more practice, Sorry

Dave

Hey guys, I appreciate the interest.  Most of the hogs, coyotes, bobcats and quail hunting that I have done has been done on my Brother's ranch in West Texas. This year I have started coyote hunting in Mn.  My son went with me this year, (we just returned Feb 9th) and we each took a nice hog, myself a boar and my son a nice sow.  If I can figure out how to post pictures I will post a couple of pictures.

Hello people, wow been so long since I posted here it says I haven't, LOL.

Anyway, originally from Minnetonka, been out in western Wright county since '93, now looking for at least a "forty" up north someplace from the north shore to Orr.  Not many critters here in MN I haven't hunted at least once, mainly hunt upland birds and deer tho. Where I hunt changes over time. For example, 2006 deer season, first week was east of Bemidji and last weekend was near bearfat's cabin north of Finland. I just go where I can when I can.

Welcome back Griz Coaltraine.

Our Minnesota site is not getting alot of hits. I think it's because we are just to busy hunting and fishing.  ;D

Hope to be heading up to the rat shack next weekend.

Good luck traveling bearfat.

I need to get back up there land hunting, but this weekend may not be the time to go judging by the weather. If you're familiar with Wildhurst Campground, I stay next door at my cousin's place when we're up there.

From Cheeseville west of Green Bay in a very rural area. We live in a small square timber log cabin we constructed ourselves in 1997. Hunt in Cheeseville on a large tract of wooded land for deer.

Started whitetail hunting north of Orr in 1999 and have gone every year except 2005 when my buddy had rotator cup surgery.

Met bearfat over on the ATV forum and kinda wondered over here from there.

Got any pic's you can post of the cabin carbineman?

For awhile I had an interest in doing heavy timber (post and beam) after I put up 2 small log cabins. I'd post pic's of the cabins but the pic's are buried deep somewhere.

My grand plan with post and beam was to periodically have a half dozen timbers milled, and as time permitted hand cut and notch them per the blueprint, and store them.  The project would have taken a few years but once each individual piece was cut and notched they could be kept out of the weather easily in a small 10x14 tin shed. You could hold off on the really long pieces until the end.

I also have an interest in cordwood masonry and hope to put up a small out building at my rat shack hunting cabin. I may have a lead on some cedar which will be the first couple of courses. Cord wood masonry never really caught on it seems. I suppose it just looks cheap to some, doesn't appeal like a log cabin or heavy post and beam construction.    :-\

Hello all.  I'm down southwest of Albert Lea.  Hunt deer around here - in-laws own land on the Blue Earth River in Faribault Co.  Also have hunted deer up near Isabella and also over by Red Lake.  Hunt the Lanesboro area for spring & fall turkey.  Get to spend a few days hunting pheasant around home too.
Otherwise, I like to hunt mulies in SW Montana.
Going to take my soon-to-be twelve y.o. daughter deer hunting on her grandpa's land this fall.  Really looking forward to that.  I really would like to try bear hunting in Northern MN too.

Mike

snapcrackpop and winfan welcome to the Minnesota side of GBO.

It just hasn't taken off very well over here. I don't know if we're too busy hunting and fishing or what.

I'm trying turkey again end of May. And this September hope to try sturgeon on MN/WS border waters.

Oh yaaa and in a couple of weeks hope to try steelhead (rainbow trout) up in the Split Rock river as they run in from Lake Superior on the north shore.    http://buckmountainchateau.com/splitrock.html

Slow time of the year (between activities).
That plus there are lots of good forums on the internet like this one, but for MN stuff I prefer fishingminnesota.
Have you checked it out?

I'll be going by the name of "killer" which is my real nic name. Here's my avatar:

It's a Newell baitcaster with 50 pound line. I've lived most my life next to Mississipp/St Croix River and love fishing for the big ugly bottom stuff.

That site has lot's of info on smelt, steelhead, and sturgeon which I was looking for.

Thanks.

I found this site because of the NEF Handi rifle stuff.
Haven't picked one up yet, leaning toward a muzzleloader to complete my fall deer hunting options.
Currently use .308, shotgun and bow.

I haven't done any smelt, steelhead or sturgeon fishing....yet.
With 2 boys (5&7) we're into crappies, walleyes and sunnies....and deer!

Ditto on the NEF bringing me on board. I switched back to the orig stock on my NEF. Still can't decide which new barrel to get...45-70 or 22 hornet.

I did have a NEF 223 in my hands the other month at Gander Mnt but went with a mil-surp and a NEF 12 gauge for the rat shack up north.

TribReady I work with lots of guys from "W".

They always call us "M" guys mudpuppies.

They don't mean those slimy black things on the bottom of the St Croix river with little legs on them do they?

Is it true you guys get some kind of royalty checks from the State of "W" from cheese sales?

Welcome

It's true. Every man, woman, and child in the state gets a tax credit for each brat, cheese curd, and beer sold   ;D

Most use any extra $$ to buy Packer apparel   ;)

Haaaaa...one of my "W" union brothers was over here drinking one night with the boys and when he came out of a Super America he spied a nine foot tall inflatable Viking football player out front. He snapped. He jumped on the inflatable and took it down beating it to a pulp.

I haven't watched the Vikings sine 1975 when I lost a $10.00 bet when I was in the military. I vowed never again.

When I purchased my portable "Otter" fish house a few years ago I got it in Packer green although they offer it in purple. It never dawned on me the colors were made for diff reasons.

Here's the "Otter" in Viking land. I just found out "W" allows spearing for sturgeon and may venture over next winter...might as well pick up some cheese while I'm over there. Cheese really is good stuff!

Yeah, we've got quite a surplus around here. I've got access to quite a few acres hereabouts. My brother in law farms the family farm. His brother works for a farmer that runs about 4500 acres. I know quite a few other farmers, and have gained permission to coyote hunt on their land.

I'm just getting started with coyotes, so I don't claim to be an expert just yet. I bought an ecaller a couple of months ago and and have a few mouth calls. I am pretty well setup for this season. We saw a few during last deer season, and shot two of them.

Lucked out up here and had a cow tag for a moose this year so that made moose hunting a little easier. Plan to head to Col next year for a deer hunt. Steve

Reside in Albert Lea, Mn.

Bluegunner,I am from Albert Lea but live in Geneva, ever get out to any shooting ranges here? Or the Archery club in town? I shoot at the archery club a lot maybe I will see you up there.
I also run a shorthair and she is  a hard hunter/tracker.

It's weird but I only hunt bear occasionaly and travel to Lanesboro twice a year for turkey and deer. I pass all those hunters giong up nort' on the way. You can see our spread on my wife's  www.chicagobayhideaway.com  site. I got my moose 6 years ago ,and bait/hunt bear on bad berry years, fish far too little and mainly keep on adding to the building project. I'm arriving late to this site and it looks like the action is tapering off, but I will be happy to answer any messages. I'm Ken Lacey ---kelacey@centurytel.net ---- 218 -475-2240

hello all across the border folks

i'm from central wisconsin (port edwards). i deer in hunt in waupaca county wi and have made the LONG trek north and west to hunt with my brother in law near Squaw Lake. (he and my sister live in Bemidji with their 3 boys). i have been hunting a few days during gun season the past 3 years (would spend more time, but it is right when the bow hunting gets good in wi and i usually tru to take some vacation time to bow hunt) took my first mn deer this year albeit only a doe. have to start somewhere i guess. used my trusty shotgun which surprised alot in their camp (we can only use shotgun/muzzleloader during gun season where i hunt in wi). for the past 7 or 8 years, i have also made a 3 day trip to ice fish. we used to go to Red lake for crappie but have not for the past 2 or 3 years. lasy year we went to lake of the woods but only got 1 walleye. the saugers we could have eaten in a brat bun - not a good trip. oh well. hope to have many more enjoyable trips back to mn. by the way, we lived in south mnpls for 7 years before moving back to wi. can hardly believe all the change - i barely found our old house !! i have enjoyed reading all your posts. good huntin and fishing to you all from a neighbor to the east.

Welcome UAD 7116 [Kris} to our state and to this forum . I'm Ken Lacey,a retired aircraft worker. I live about as far away from you as you can travel ,and still be in MN! That is the far NE tip of the state ,about 25 miles from the Canadian border at the junction of L. Superior. Great bear hunting up here ,good fishing, declining moose, cycling grouse  a few ducks and not a single pheasant or turkey. We had 21 deer in our yard today, they come down from the back-country because it's warmer by the lake. The wolves come along too,so we keep a close eye on our Goldens. We drive across the state to hunt deer in the corn country ,visit with friends and a half -year later we go back down there and hunt turkeys in the same woods. If you want to hunt bear I can bait for you  and you can stay here but you can do as well within 50 miles of your place . Any way ,welcome!   Ken

Hello, I am new to the site and once again new to the state. I was born a southern boy (Albert Lea, Mn.) and moved thru-out the U.S. as well as 53 other countries during my stint with the Army. Moved back to the mid-west after 5 years in So. Ca. Only shooting they did there was downtown or on the freeways, good place to leave. Lived in Wisc. for 13 years and now back in Cambridge Mn. Hunt deer, fox, coy, whistle pigs, bear around the Askov and Sunrise area and hogs in east Texas every year. Bow, smoke-pole and conventional long and handguns. Other than hunting I like to fish, camp, 4-wheel, re-load and my veggie garden.

Hello everyone: thejanitor from Bemidji here, we hunt small game/grouse, archery for deer, rifle for deer in MN & MT. Muzzleloader (flint lock) when the opportunity comes along. We enjoy reloading for our deer rifles
We used to blackpowder rendezvous and enjoyed it much, life got busy and something had to go.... But we still enjoy shooting and throwing hawk & knife.
We deer hunt on state land, camp at state parks in the summer when we can.
We try to ice fish a few times a winter, But we fish often in the summer.
Thanks everyone for posting. I like the idea of a shoot if the date works out.
Thanks, Brent
