Title: If you could only have one Double Action Revolver that you currently dont own.
Post by: dougk on September 20, 2006, 04:44:28 AM
If you could only own one double action revolver, but it has to be one you currently dont own.  What would it be, what caliber and why?

In double action the pistol I would want is the S & W Double Action Revolver Model 27.
Caliber: 357 Magnum
Barrel Length: 3-1/2 inches
Overall Length: 8-7/8 inches
Weight: 41 ounces
Finish: Blue / Nickel Alloy
Stocks: Ivory, GSP in right hand stock
Purchase Date: October 18, 1935
Cost: $60
Serial Number: 47022

Anyone want to guess who owned it?

S&W M-29 6"....  I'd rather have my M-18 (and a couple others) too, but if i could only have one, it would be the 29...

I picked it because it's VERY accurate, has a wonderfull action, and has enough HP to get the job done....

Also, it's easy to cast bullets and reload for..

S&W M29 5-screw, 4" barrel, blue and factory Class "A" engraved. Narrow smooth trigger and small service type hammer. Keith gold bar front sight and tall w/o rear.

...can only have one, mine as well make it a good one.

It would be my old S&W 29 with 10-5/8" barrel that I used to be holding in my avatar for so many years. I carried that gun on hundreds of hunts in several states and killed more game with it than any gun I've ever owned I guess. In addition I won a lot of trophies and money shooting. What in the world possessed me to let it go is beyond me. But the fellow who got it from me sure doesn't wanna let it go.

A S&W L Comp: the PC built 3" L frame, 7 shot .357.  Great combination of accuracy, power, handiness, and all around usefullness.

This was a hard choice.  The runners up are a tuned 3" M66/.357 and a tuned M21-4 .44 Special.  This M21 has a full length cylinder, which should allow some good cast bullet loads.

And there are other good S&W gunsmiths, but if I had these two I would like Bill Davis to tune them.  I understand he is enjoying a well deserved retirement.

Fitz cherrywood grips on all these wheelguns, with an extra set in duramite for use in bad weather.

I have to make a correction to my above post.  It didn't register "in my mind" at that time, that the post is about a revolver that i "didn't" still own!  So, i've had to rethink my answer....

The only revolver i've owned in the past and can say it would perhaps still be nice to own, would be a S&W M-48 with 6" bbl....(22 Win. mag.) that i sold long ago.  I probable wouldn't shoot it much nor do i even need it, but it was very accurate and i shot it well...

One time, i had a big male german shepherd dog come at me at a full run growling with teeth showing.  I was out on a horse trail that parlleled a hi-way, (in Alaska) and i happen to have had that M-48 in my snowmobile suit....  I yelled at him waveing one arm while reaching for that M-48 with the other, but he still came for me running full on!   I only had time for one very fast shot that hit him squarely in the head as he slammed into me, thankfully dead, and nearly knocking me off my feet!  To this day i can still see the sight picture as the gun went off.

I saw a nickle M21 the other day that sure looked nice. However, for all practical purposes, I'd have to go with a 3" M13.

Probably a S&W 629.  But a Super Redhawk is tempting too.  Just can't decide.  Maybe a .500.  There are just so many choices, it's hard to pick just one.

Smith & Wesson model 10 with fixed sights and bull barrel with ramped front sight in .38 special.

Why?

It's very accurate, will shoot +P ammo, can stand heavy hot reloads, fast to draw out of holster with the fixed rear sight and ramped front sight. Don't have to worry about sights getting knocked out of zero. Only downside on the fixed sight model is, it doesn't like the 125 grain ammo, so you have to make do with the 158 grain stuff, but being a reloader, I can work that out fairly easy. .

Model 27-3.5'' barrel-Stolen from me during an armed robbery. Was bending over putting soda pop in a cooler at my Dad's carry out. Felt a tug, and when I straightened up, expecting to see a friend screwing around, a black guy put his .45 to my head and said ,you wasn't planning on using this were you. I said I guess not, so he ended with the gun, which was actually worth more than the $150 or so that was in the till. That was 32 years ago. Never see that one again.

A blued, used, 4in Colt Python, ser. # 49495, that I carried as a duty wepon when I was a cop, years ago.  Still with the wear to the  bluing, the bent sight, and the sanded down grips that I had on it back then.  Shot that pistol better than any I have ever owned in my life.

Mine would be a Charter Bulldog 44 special. Wanted one since '86.
But was talked out of it.  >:( (Guess it's time.)

Have always enjoyed the pocket snubs and have several small bore,357 down.

Had the big bore Magnums. They're gone, long time now. But had a lot of fun with them. :)

I am a very fortunate man in the revolver category.  I currently own 2 Dan Wesson 357's with multiple barrels(2.5",4".6".8"), 1 Dan Wesson 44mag with multiple barrels (4", 4"comp, 6", 6"factory hunter scope only, 8") and 2 Dan Wesson 445 Supermags with multiple barrels (4", 4" comp, 6" and 8").  As far as protection and hunting goes, I have the revolver end pretty well covered.  If I could get only 1 other double action revolver, It would probably be a S&W 500 with a 4" tube.  That would give a lot of extra power over my 445 Supermag for protection against rogue water buffalo, raging brown bears, and any carnivorous dinosaurs that may still be walking the planet.

Any dangerous animal too big for my 445 is really too big for any handgun, and I would rather have a long gun for protection aganst those beasts, but I would also rather have the extra power of the S&W 500 if it came down to "have to" with a handgun.  If Dan Wesson came out with a 500 tomorrow, I would take a second mortgage if need be to buy one, and that would likely be the last revolver I would ever buy period, including extra barrels of course (except maybe a Ruger 9mm snubnose if I ever find a good used one.)

Im surprised only one other person mentioned the Python.  I just cant decide on a 4 or 6 inch barrel.  In blue of course.  Honest holster wear is fine like the looks of a mature beautiful woman, and aged scotch, they get better when handled with a smooth touch not shoved away in a safe.

Always like the look of the first colt pythons blued about a 6 inch barrel, Why? I bet it had some thing to do with a very old gun digest my dad had laying around the house when I was a youngster, And that it was the only Color page in the book, the blueing in the picture was soooo blue it was near black, they don't make them like that any more. Hmmm I bet there was a marketing plan on that one.....

Fun question!  If it were something available over the counter, it would be "obtainable" so it would have to be something else then.

How about a 2 1/2-inch barreled, round-butted S&W 658?  That would be a .41 Magnum, stainless snubbie.  I'll have aged, real checkered ivory boot grips with that, please.

That would be the S&W M657 Magnum Hunter. Baring that then a 681 S&W converted to .41Special. Kind of a S&W 658 (if only) Lite.

S&W 329PD (even though I don't like the internal lock).

I think this would be a great lightweight revolver to pack during hiking or hunting.

I guess it would have to be a Super Redhawk .454.

I know its not a DA, but what I really would like to have is a Freedom Arms premier grade .454 with a six inch barrel. The problem is its a little out of my price range for a hand gun.

Decisions, decisions!

OK, Colt Diamondback 4" bbl. blue steel, .38 SPL. I love my Detective Special and like my Police Positive a lot, and would like the adjustable sights on what is essentially the same gun. I have always thought the vent rib was classy looking, too.

(But I'm most likely to actually GET a S&W Mod. 30-1, 4" bbl. .32 S&W Long, to which I will have a good gunsmith add adjustable sights. Purpose: lightweight & compact trail gun, and could adjust sights to my 115g, 850fps load.)

1. Ruger Redhawk in 357mag. S/S  5 1/2" barrel
2. Ruger Redhawk in 41mag.  S/S  5 1/2" barrel
3. Ruger Redhawk in 44mag. S/S  9 1/2" barrel
4. Ruger Super Black Hawk in 44mag  blue 10" barrel
5. Ruger Super Blackhawk in 45 long colt  7 1/2" barrel
6. Ruger Security Six in 357mag. S/S 6" barrel

If ruger offered a "super sized" super redhawk in 500 S&W i buy that too. But i want a 12" or 15" barrel barrel with a weight compisation under the barrel like the python has.

I may go after S&W's in 357 and in 41mag if i can't get the rugers i want.  I talked with ruger about manufacturing the redhawks in 357 and in 41 again but its always deaf ears. I'm fed up with waiting and hoping.

No cut intended but i wonder the disadvantages of having a gun made years ago . The metal in those guns may be finished better ( a judgement call at best ) but the strength just can't match what we have today ?

In the case of those old "N" frames, they were overbuilt to begin with, so it's a non-issue that metals may be better today.

It seems the new guns in SS don't wear or rust as much . They seem to resist flame cutting and errosion better also. Overbuilt is a great example a new 686 is smaller lighter and of better metal than an old mod.27 or 28 .

for a present to myself for my 63rd birthday.
I have had several before and was dumb enough to sell them.
Very simple, nothing at all extra, great revolver.

I would go with a 3" Model 36 or 60 with the full lug barrel and adjustable sights. I would have the action slicked up and the butt rounded with a Tyler T-Grip and a set of sambar stag grips from Ajax. Back it up with HKS speed loaders with Remington Golden Sabers and a couple of Bianchi Speed Strips and carry it in an floral El Paso Saddlery Tom Threepersons holster.

You know what? I deserve it. MAKE IT TWO OF EVERYTHING!!!!

These "only one gun" choices are frustrating to me.....I tend to think in Survival mode and that a 2-gun choice makes more sense.....something for bigger 2 and 4 legged critters and something for small game.  In light of that I would probably choose a S&W 625 in .45ACP (I'm a big 1911 fan and have lots of that ammo) and a S&W 617 in .22LR.  The 625 could be loaded hot enough to handle most big game under 50yds (especially w/plus P loads) w/o excessive muzzle blast and recoil for faster follow-up shots; and the 617 would provide for cheap and light weight ammo to take the myriad of small game available.

Plenty on www.gunbroker.com

Have to add shipping and dealer transfer fee.  And, in my case, a state fee.

Prices are a bit all over the place, but I just bought a nice 65-3 4" off gunbroker for $310.  Crazy thing is I find many stainless M65's for same price or less than the blued M13 version!   ::)

My final cost in my case, with shipping/transfer/state fee, = $365  A bargain compared to price of a new K-frame!

Probably an original S&W "Registered Magnum" with a 5-1/2" barrel, in the original box with papers, etc.

For those who are not familiar with that piece, it's the first version of the .357 magnum (N sized frame),
custom built by S&W, pioneered by Colonel Daniel Baird Wesson and Phil Sharpe back around 1935.

The Registered Magnum eventually evolved into the Model 27.

Really?  I shot IHMSA for a number of years with my M-29 8-3/8" useing my cast 250 SWC over 23.0 of H-110 and won many matches.  In fact i won 13 in a row, and my 29 has needed nothing at all.  I shot the same gun/load i hunted with, and most times i didn't even have a spotter and i shot high 30's.  I shot that 8-3/3 at least 50 rounds a week and most weeks 100 rounds.

I also have a 6" 29 that i've shot a huge amount too, and it hasn't needed anything either.

So i just haven't seen all the problems some posters have mentioned.

Well, cross one more off my list of DA revolvers I don't own.
Purchased a 642 Lady Smith the other day.   OK make that a DAO revolver.
Just fit right in my pocket and with the conceeled hammer it pops out with out a snag.  And the Rose wood grips look great.
I now own an I, J, K/3, L and N/2 Frame guns.
as well as a Colt Det Spl in the double action revolvers.
A couple more K and N frames and I think I will be off this thread as I will have the ones I want.
Found a 4" round butt S&W M19 in Glendale the other day but the owner wanted $750 for it as a consignment and it seemed about $300 over priced.

Just read the thread (well some of it) on the "best" double action ever, well, now I can honostly say if I could have any double action that I don't currently own....It'd be a Korth.....never seen one, but obviously it must be a doosy....... 8)

S&W Model 625 Mountain Gun.  Or a Model 25 Mountain gun.  45 Colt is my all time favorite handgun cartridge.

Already have a S&W Mountain Gun in 45 Colt and a S&W 629 w 8 in bbl.  ::)  Maybe a S&W Mountain Gun in 44 Rem Mag to match it, a S&W model 58 in 41 mag aka San Francisco PD issued, S&W 617 or 17 in 22 RF, or a S&W kit gun 4 in bbl in 22 RF.

I can't even tell you how many thousand rounds of jacketed ammo i've seen go through old 27's, all without any issues at all...  They are amazingly strong and well built!

That said I have yet to see a 27 or 29 hold up while shooting IMHSA . I know the loads are upper limit but still .

Keep in mind I was talking jacketed bullets at over max. for S&W along the lines of Ruger / TC loades.

Seeing as how i won so many IHMSA matches, and killed everything from moose on down with the above load, i learned i don't need to OVER LOAD a handgun to get the job done...

Looks like after all this time I have not replyed to this post. I guess maybe that I did not have a revolver on my list of wants. Now I would like a S&W 686. But I do wish sometimes that I had bought the very nice python chambered in 38 special (not 357 mag.)that I saw several years back.

Shows the difference in taste. I wouldn't have one of those revolving carbines. Revolvers are noisy enough without having them that close to my head.

I too had a S&W 25-5 about 20 years ago and foolishly sold it. It was one of my best shooting big bore guns. I sold it because I was afraid that some day I might accidentally get one of my 'hot' .45 Colt rifle loads in it by mistake.
I have a little Taurus .45 ACP revolver now that is a handier carry gun but I sure would like to have a S&W chambered for the .45 Special case.

I've seen quite a few of those LCR 22's around, so it shouldn't be too hard to find one...  I was at a Cabela's a few days ago, and they had them there, along with my local gunshop had them too.
