Please give me a lesson in physics...
« on: April 12, 2003, 01:04:57 PM »
Fellas, I purchased the Weaver model 301S mount for my Ruger SBH.  It will hold Burris Zee rings and a quality scope (undecided on that one!)  I installed the mount, which uses a yoke to "clamp" onto the barrel:

It appears and feels very solid, yet I can't for the life of me figure out how this is possibly secure.  How does it grab the barrel? Has anyone used this mount system?  Any comments?  Can someone please explain this so I can sleep tonight!
I realize this isn't a 'one-wheel enigma', but I thought I'd ask the experts here!
Thanks in advance for any help!

I'd be happy to give you a lesson in Physics ... but I'm not familiar with your mount ... not that that would keep me from discussing the physics    but I'd need to see a pic of this system mounted before I could discuss it inteligently. I looked at the Midway ad, but it wasn't clear what attaches to what as they didn't show the system mounted.

It appears to me that the top outside part of the rail squeezes the outside of the "clamp" as you tighten it down as there is a gap between the rail itself and the barrel clamp. I would assume that the rear of the mount screws into the rear sight mounting hole to keep the unit from shifting durring recoil. I have never used or actually seen one of these but personally I don't put much faith in any mount that "clamps" to a pistol. I would find one that has to be screwed to the top strap. Or if your against drilling holes in you pistol I would look into tradeing for a Hunter model with the built in scope mounts.  Just my $.02.   KN

Stoots,

Nearly 30 years ago, before 'scoped handguns had gained much credit, I put a similar--note that I said similar--mounting system on a Ruger Security-six handgun.  I really don't remember the base manufacturer.  Then a little Bushnell 'scope was mounted in place.  There was not too much selection in brands of anything involving 'scopes on handguns--or at least that is my memory!!  Anyhow, I was the "talk of the town" being able to hit 12 ounce beverage cans at 65 yards with this 357 Magnum when it was placed on a very good sandbag rest.

Now to the reason I am posting this.  Eventually, the screw hole threads stripped on the on screw that held the base to the area of the handgun where the rear sight had been.  It had to be removed to put the base in place.  Luckily, a good 'smith in the area was able to drill and retap it so the original rear sight could be put back in place.  This was only a 357 Magnum and recoil was not all that vicious.  Be careful if you are putting this type of system on a handgun that might have much more recoil than my 357 Magnum.  Maybe the Weaver system is much better than the one I had.  Anyhow, good-luck with your venture...BCB
