need help with 458 wm

 I would appreciate some reloading imfo for 400 & 450 gr  bullets out of a 24" barrel/ bolt gun.
 I'd like to find a combo that drives a 400gr @ 2300-2400fps and also one that moves the 450gr @ 2000 - 2100 fps.
 My eventual use of either of these is DG (buffalo).

I have worked up a very accurate load with the 450 gr. Barnes TSX.  It consists of 72 grns. of H4895, with a Fed. 215 primer.  Since the throat of my CZ is rather long, I am able to seat the bullet out, and crimp in the second groove on the bullet, giving me more case capacity, and less powder compression.  This may vary with other rifles.  This load clocks 2225 fps. out of my 25" barrel, and gives me 1 1/2" groups @ 100 yds. with open sights.  Which is to say that the load shoots better that I can shoot it!

The only downside to these bullets(other than the cost), is that they do foul your bore considerably.  I have found that the foaming bore cleaners take much of the concern away regarding this problem.  Your bore may be smoother than mine, and I hope that is the case.

I regret, I do not have any experience with 400 grn. bullets to pass along.  Short of ordering the North Fork versions in that weight, I have not been able to find a supply of 400 grn. bullets designed for anything above 45-70 velocities.  If you do shoot 400 grainers, you may find that you have to get a taller front sight, if you are using the irons.

gwindrider: I have a Charles Daly 458WM (Zastava action/barrel)with a 2XLeupold 20mm heavy duplex mounted on it. I have been shooting paper with Rem JSP 405 gr at 45-70 velocities  only because I have a box of 500 left from the 45-70 days when Midway had them on sale 2 years ago. I've been using a Lee Factory crimp die on the second cannelure with them.
 I shall try your load very soon as the Barnes TS is the bullet I planned on using next July when I take that gun for buffalo in Zimbabwe. Let's face facts if that load doesn't kill a buff or slow his charge in the unlikely event I get charged so the PH can pour in somemore lead nothing I can shoot from the shoulder accurately will either! Can only help with the 450grn. fullmetal roundnose ( Custom Bullets ) ; Remington cases , C.C.I. magnum primers and 64grns. Alliant Reloader 7 . This gives 2350 fps from a 26ins. barrel .
Very accurate and proven on Cape Buffalo .

Best of luck on that upcoming Buff hunt, and I agree with your opinion on that bullet, and cartridge.  If that won't kill it with a properly placed shot, I don't think I would want to meet it!

Is there an advantage to the lighter bullets for buffalo? I've always read that the 500 grainers were the ones to use, but most of that was written before things like the copper Barnes bullets were developed.  Thanks.

A quality .458 bullet @ 2300fps+ will kill anything that walks in Africa. It is the Dble gun crowd that so endears themselves to calibers in the .470NE and up whom would like everyone to believe you need to be shooting 500grs or more. yet even in a .375 H&H a 270-300gr bullet is considered the Utopia of combos for lion,buffalo,etc.
