30-06 accuracy
« on: September 24, 2006, 10:04:08 AM »
I am in the market for buying a new gun and I was wondering how your Encore '06s shoot... I am talking about the ones with open sights with walnut stocks and a blued finish. Also have any of you had any problems or dislikes about this firearm?

Thanks

If a .308 is close enough..........

I have a .308 SS Encore and love it - it is more accurate than I can hold, very portable, and just plain old fun to shoot.  I went with the .308/7.62 because I also shoot a M1A.  I love the thing.  As far as I am concerned, the Encore is hard to beat.....

this year when I bought my encore 25-06 I also picked up a box of remington 100 gr sp's so I could have some brass when I was done.
with a quick zero then out to 100 meters it was printing 1 inch groups with fac. ammo.yes they do shoot ;D.
don't really like the stock sights but was going to scope it anyways.
buy it you will like it.

I had a problem with my Encore 30/06 barrel but it was repaired at no charge by T/C.  Depending on the load, I get a little less than 1 to about 1½ MOA with it.  It has open sites but I have it set up with Kwik Site see through rings so I can use the iron sites if necessary (like for my close running shot on a ground hog) and also scoped for longer shots.

I like the adjustable sites on Encore pistols but am not particularly enamored with the adjustment process on the rear site of the Encore.  The windage adjustment is fine.  For elevation, one must loosen two small screws and then move the site up or down and try to guess where it should be.  T/C should come up with a better system for their rifle sites.  Not withstanding this, I did shoot a deer (one shot was enough) with an open sited Encore in 270 Winchester.  The Encore trigger, though quite serviceable, is much better after a trigger job.  I know T/C can make good triggers because I have no complaints about my out-of-the-box Contender; they should do a little work on the Encore's trigger.

Fox Ridge Outfitters sells some very nice walnut thumbhole stocks for the Encore and Contender which I have.  For hunting in the wilds, I much prefer their composite stocks and especially the thumbhole versions.

If I didn't REALLY LIKE T/C products, I wouldn't have so many of them.  It's really hard for me to pass up a good buy on an Encore or Contender barrel.

I had my Encore 26" SS 30-06 out at the range this last weekend.  I haven't done enough load development or tried enough factory ammo to get MOA accuracy yet.  I was frustrated with the accuracy I was gettign at the range this last weekend but when I got home and cleaned it I noticed the forend was slighty loose!  That may have thrown my accuracy off.  I have the synthetic thumbhole on mine and love the added comfort it gives.  They're good guns.

I also considered a 300 Win. mag or a 7mm mag but I heard the recoil was pretty stiff on them

Buckmaster,
Any real gun is gonna kick.  If it kicks too much for you take it to a gunsmith and have them put a grind to fit limbsaver recoil pad on it for you.  I have a 300 RUM and the limbsaver recoil pad is a must.  I have a savage 30-06 with a limbsaver and a savage 210F 12 ga with a limbsaver on it.  Limbsavers cut the recoil down by almost half and are well worth the money if the recoil is too much!

I have a T/C Encore in 7mm Rem. Mag. with a muzzel brake and it's a real pussy cat (much less recoil than my 30/06) and very accurate.

Grumulkin... did your 7mm come from the factory with a muzzle break or did you have to get it put on??

I have a 30-06 Ackley Improved barrel and accuray has been very good with factory Hornady ammo.  I intend to start reloading is why I went with the AI chambering as you can work up some really good loads.  I have always shot small caliber rounds so I also had a muzzle break put on and I also have a Limbsaver grind to fit pad.  This set up kicks less than my 6mm Rem!  In hindsight I'm sure the recoil pad by itself would have been enough, but my first trip to the range I shot 40 rounds before I quit shooting - I only stopped because I ran out of ammo!  I'm very happy with this rig.

The 7mm Mag. barrel was new with a muzzel brake when I bought it and it appears to be a T/C muzzel brake.  The finish on the brake is slightly different than the barrel so I suspect it was added to the barrel after initial manufacture.  Perhaps the slightly different finish was why I got it at such a good price; in any case, I would consider it about the best Encore barrel I have.

I thought I didn't like muzzel brakes (I'm not particularly recoil sensative) but my 7mm Mag. with the brake certainly is sweet.
