Brand New NEF 280Rem.
« on: October 04, 2006, 06:18:30 PM »
I just bought my third handi today. An SB2 in 280Rem. Have not been able to shoot it yet, but was wondering if there is anything that I should do to it first and foremost. My other rifle have been excellent and this rifle will be used for an upcoming Mule deer hunt here in New Mexico. I am very picky or worrysome about having an accurate rifle, when it comes to hunting.....

Hello The Chad, Welcome to these forms, and the wonderful world of
Handi-holics. One Handi and you will want another.
What part of New Mexico are you going after the big Muley?
You need to report back, after you the new rifle also on the hunt.
 Good luck Marv,

Welcome to GBO!! The .280 is one of the most accurate Handi calibers available, many here love it, including me!!

Thanks for the hearty welcome. I have looking around at this sight for a while and have learned some great tips. I live in Tucumcar(TOO COME CARRY) and will be hunting a freind of mine's ranch about 20 minutes from my house. I have been hunting coyotes there for several years and have seen a couple of very large bucks, so hopefully I can find one in November.....

I do have one question for anyone that has reloaded for the 280. What Overall Length due you recommend. The reason is, I was loading some 139gr. Honrady SSTs last night and wanting to set the length right, I lightly seated a bullet in an empty, unprimed case and them loaded it in the chamber and closed the action to set the bullet at the lands. I was suprised that the rifle seems to have a very deep throat and the length is extemely long. So, I backed off and set them in at .030 off the lands. Any concerns or recommendations.

Deep throats are the norm for most Handi calibers, although my .280 isn't near as bad as a lot of others. I can reach the lands with a 140gr ballistic silvertip, right now it's being rechambered to .280 Ackley. ;D Most that can't get close to the lands, just load to SAAMI recommended COL.

After seating my bullets at .030 off the lands, I have a little over 1/4in. of the bullets bearing surface seated in the case and that does'nt take in the boattail. So, I think I will be alright! I just need to shoot it and see how it groups. This is a pet load of mine that  I have used in a SIG Arms SHR970 and it grouped very well_sub moa....... So, I hope it shoots in this gun.
