280 rem. handi barrel on a trcker slug gun frame.
« on: October 05, 2006, 03:49:33 PM »
While at the range today, I had a slight misshap.
I had a case blow a primer and get stuck in the barrel. When I calmed down and got my cleaning rod to pop the case out, I found that the case had split around about 1/2 inch above the rim. ???
I closed the action, and imediately noticed that the fit was loose.
I don't know if I overloaded, or underloaded. I have been using win. nickle cases, 9831  powder 55 gr. and 160 gr bullets. This is under max load in all my books and is a nail driver usually.
My question is, can I use my tracker II frame with my handi barrel? It closes very tight, and seems to work well.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks Stan. ???

Definately not!!! The SB1 Tracker frame isn't made for the pressures of any high pressure rounds, doing so will  not have a happy ending. 9831? or did you mean 4831? How many times had you reloaded that case? 55gr of H4831 is a max load for 160gr bullets according to Hodgdon and Lee. 51.7gr IMR4831 is max in my Hornady book.

Yep , i'm with Quick on this one , the SB1 frame is NOT made to take the pressure of the rifle rounds as a rule , now some do shoot low pressure rounds with the shotgun frames BUT there other things to consider like fireing pin size and pin hole size to name just a couple .

You will find a how to fix for a loose barrel in the FAQs at the top of the CF page or give H&R CS a call if it is a newer rifle .

Thanks , and I am sory for the typo, H 4891, I got thr load info from my Lyman book, which lists 56.6 as the max load. I promptly went home and pulled and measured every round from that run. They all checked out, I was using new brass,I have fired several rounds of this out of onother loading run, with no problems. with no signs of pressure, I haven't got a clue as to why the incident occured. I am very glad you informed me on the frame. I like being able to write and ask these questions, and get reliable answers.
Would the frame on my 223 handi fit the 280?
Thank s all for your help, I will try to find the sticky. Be assured I will be very carefull in the extream, in my future reloading.
Thanks again, Stan

H4891?  ??? The .223 frame should work fine. You may be better off just sending the rifle in for repair if you aren't comfortable with fixing it yourself, although you may still have to do some alteration to get the barrel to fit the .223 frame.
