I have read somewhere that ruger is going to come out with a stainless synthetic rifle chambered in 358 winchester and this has got me thinking. 

Right now I am shooting a .30-06 but I just want something a little different.  I also shoot a .35 rem so I have a bit of a 35 cal bug.  The .30-06 is really about as much recoil as I want, my gun is a savage 110 and is rather light compared to other rifles I have held.  I am not really a good enough shot to be shooting over 300 yards so I dont need the extra range of the 06 and I like the larger diameter bullet.  Right now all I will be hunting for is deer and possibly hogs but there is always the chance of something bigger in the future.

My question is, what velocities could be achieved in a 20-22" barreled ruger if I was using 225gr. bullets?    I have seen the new 338 federal advertised as throwing a 210gr bullet at over 2600fps, shouldnt the .358 be able to meet or surpass this if they were loaded to the same pressure?

jbadams66:  I am a big fan of the .358 and have been shooting/hunting with one for 25 years now.  Almost all of my shooting as been with 180 gr Speers or 200 gr Hornadys, but from what I have seen from shooting those in a 20" barrelled BLR, you probably can't expect to see 2600 fps out of a short barrel with a 225 grain bullet.  Most reloading data that I have seen is showing roughly 2500 fps with a 200 grain bullet out of a 26" barrel - and those are with max loads.

The M77 All Weather is also available in 350 Remington Magnum. 180 grain bullets at 300 fps. I've just gotten one, and I love it!

 ;)jb, I have an old model 99 Sav. in 358. While it isn't a tack driver, I like it for elk and deer in the in the timber. I also took it to Tx. shooting hogs. It hammered them. I used 200 grain bullets for all of my shooting. Mostly Hornadys. When I hunt open country, which we have lots of here, I use an open country rifle. To me this is a great caliber. I think if I didn't have the Sav., I would have one barreled up with a fairly stiff barrel. I think for your country and hunting, it would be about PERFECT 8)

Its funny i was just over at guns america  checking out what was for sale and they had  a old winchester model 88 in 358 it sold in less then an hour  for $1295.00  All these years i never had an interest in 35 caliber rifles until this year , back in the spring i bought a new remington 750 in 35 Whelen
and this thing groups like my 30/06's  , i'll be using factory 250 psp's this year for deer and bear in NY I think i have been missing out all these years.
