What is it?

It's an H&R 20 gauge.  It's not marked but I think it's a Model 48.  What length shells do you think it uses?  How old?

Any Idea what the first letter in the serial # is?  Does it have a hammer?

No hammer, thumb safety in it's place.  First letter in serial number is A.

That's a nice looking piece.  The case hardened receiver looks to be in great shape. I wounder if the checkering on the stocks is factory or if it was done later?

Can you get a better shot at the left side of the receiver and the bottom specificly the trigger guard?
