October black powder kills
« on: October 26, 2006, 05:54:00 PM »
Well Briarhoppers, did anybody kill anything exceptional over the last weekend's black powder hunt?  I hunted in Franklin County Saturday evening and only saw three young does.  I let them walk.  Sunday was so windy that I woke up early, walked outside and then just went back to bed.  Hunted that evening though and didn't see a thing.  I mean nothing at all and I know I'm smack dab in the center of a great place.  Have to about hunt them like rabbits when the wind blows as hard as it did Sunday.  Sitting still doesn't nomally get the job done in those conditions.

A woman with whom I work has a brother and he laid the smack down on a great 8 pointer with a sticker of a drop tine on Saturday morning.  He was hunting up around Monterey in Owen County but Owen County is the number one county in the state.  She brought some pics for me to see and this deer was a deer of a lifetime.  Big old bases with a lot of pearling and an inside spread of 20".  Tine length was pretty respectable, too.  G-2's were in the neighborhood of a foot long.  Got me foaming for the modern gun season.

Yea, Monterey has always been a good area to hunt, that is where I got my first deer when I was young, boy was dad mad, he hadn't even made it to his hide when I put the smackdown on a 12 point with a 7x57. Ah yes, those were the days...

Now you got me wondering if any the people I knew are still alive around there, might have to check it out and get an out of state lic. since I am living in Ohio now.

Good luck, keep hunting that area and I know you will nail a good one.

Thanks, Greg.  Are you up around Cincinnati or what?

You said you used a 7x57?  Great round that you don't hear much about these days.  Don't hunters in Ohio have to use a slug gun?

This place I'm hunting in Franklin County is covered up in deer but I'm going to have to change my tactics if I go on in to bowhunt between now and gun season.  These animals haven't touched my corn in a couple of weeks.  I know what they're feeding on though.  They're all over these acorns right now.  Monday night I had a commercial building I clean that has a lot of oaks on it and I had three deer come running TOWARD me while I was in the parking lot standing beside my vehicle. They knew I was there but they came on anyway and stopped under the oaks not 30 yards away feeding.  They'd look up at me a lot but didn't run off.  I just went on in the building and watched them until they left.  They were two older does and a button buck.  They do love acorns.
