I'm wanting to buy a 1911 but not sure what manufacture to go with. Trying to stay at a reasonable price. Looking towards the Kimber. Found a Custom II for $400 used but in good condition with factory box and 2 mags. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are a lot of good to great 1911's on the market now - I have several Clark accurized Colt 1911's now, however, if I were in the market for another, I would look at the Traurus 1911 models. I have seen them and have followed them, and they appear to be a "best buy" right now.

Mines a Springfield ACP. I thought it was reasonable priced. Its an excellant gun.

That's a good price on the Kimber,you might want to get that one. The Springfields are excellent guns also.

I think you would be doing yourself a disservice not to take a look at the offerings of Colt's. Once you handle one, I think you'll agree that a real Government Model has no equal.

Springfield's are my favorite. I did buy a Taurus PT1911 & it is a great pistol but a little hard to find at the moment. That Kimber deal is a good one. I'd pick it up if you really want a 1911.

My first 1911 was a Star PD. Then I had a commander and a gov't built up from parts. I had a Kimber Custom and I enjoyed that very much. Later a Colt Officer's came along. Great gun but it eventually got traded off for a Glock. (I know, don't remind me!) I now own a three Colts, an engraved Gov't, a stainless Combat Commander, and a Defender and I am extremely pleased. As dogwhisperer said, there IS a difference. 44 Man

I own a couple of the older Colts and they are well made guns,but the new ones leave a lot to be desired,plus they are outragous in price. Springfield makes an excellent one out of the box for a reasonable price. That Kimber is a good deal at that price.

As with most manufacturers, Colt's has had periods when quality wasn't up to what should be expected with the brand name...however, the ones I have examined in the last several years have been all one could expect. Certainly price always plays a part in purchases, but I have found in 50 years of "gun runnin'" that a little more spent on something you really want and like is money well spent. You tend to keep them...rather than tradeing them off somewhere down the line.
All I'm saying is at least look at the Colt's...if you REALLY don't see/feel a difference from the other makes...by all means go with price. I'm betting the Hartford gun will sing to you more than the competition.

The last new Colt I picked up was at a gun show ealier this year and it rattled so bad it was pathetic. The Springfield loaded are good tight guns out of the box. I see way more Springfields than Colts (newer models) at the IDPA or IPSC matches. If you really want a top notch 45 get a Les Baer, they lock up like a bank vault.

I guess that why some like Fords...and some like Chevys....different folks see the same things and come away with differing opinions on which is best. You don't like Colt's offerings; I can't see myself buying anything but the "real deal".
I still say GoneHunting should look at all offerings, including Colt's, and decide for himself. I don't think in the end what you prefer, or I prefer, really matters.

I don't dislike Colts,as a matter of fact I have a 70 Series Govt. Model and a Combat Commander (70's model). I also have a Springfield Govt. Model. All have been customized by my gunsmith friend Tim Thompson. He will customize just about any 1911 platform you want,but if he gets to choose he starts with a Springfield. The new Colts are overpriced for what you get, and it doesn't matter whether we're talking 1911's,AR-15's,or Single Action Army's.

Colt's cost too much? Well, I think that is relative, but they reall don't cost much more than say, a Kimber. My dealer has a stainless Gov't for $700, about the same price as a Kimber Custom. The engraved Colt cost me $950 new and the Defender $825, there again, less than a Kimber CDP! Yes, some can cost a lot such as a Gunsite model, but so can special tricked out model's from most of the companys. Not to knock any other brand as I have had them also, I just like the Colts. Quality wise, all of mine are series '80's, and the quality has been excellent. They are all good shooters too. 44 Man

If you haven't already done so, get the Kimber. That is a fantastic price. After that Springfield would get my vote.

I'm with Ramos1212 if the Kimber is still there, get it, cause that's about as cheap as you're going to get a quality 45.
